Three major browser vendors-Apple, Opera and Mozilla Foundation-have set up Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WhatWG) to develop new versions of traditional HTML. Recently, the W3C has also taken note of these activities and launched its own next-generation HTML project, and many of the members of both sides are the same. The two projects are likely to merge eventually. Although many details are still being debated, the general outline of the next version of HTML is clear.

Web developers have been expecting a new version of HTML (commonly known as HTML 5, but also known as Web Applications 1.0) since 1999, and now it has finally been released. It retains the original features of HTML: no namespaces or schemas. The element does not have to end. Browsers are tolerant of mistakes. P is still p < P > table is still table.

If a Web developer were frozen in 1999 and thawed now, he would encounter some new confusing elements. Yes, elements that he is familiar with (such as div) still remain; however, HTML now contains new elements such as section, header, footer, and nav. However, if he takes a closer look, he will find that there is actually no difference between these elements. Many of these elements may have been needed by developers but not available in 1999. These new elements are easy to understand by making a simple analogy with the elements he has already mastered. In fact, they are very easy to master compared to Ajax or CSS.

Finally, when he opens 300MHz's laptop (which runs Windows 98, which was also frozen in 1999), he may be surprised by the effect of the new pages displayed in Netscape 4 and Windows ®Internet Explorer ®5. Of course, these old browsers don't recognize the new elements and will ignore them completely, but the page will still be displayed and the content will still be complete.

This is not a fictional story. HTML 5 is designed to degrade smoothly in browsers that don't support it. The reason is simple: we are all such "primitive people". Browsers now have tabs, CSS, and XmlHttpRequest, but their HTML display engines remain at 1999 levels. Apart from the significant increase in the number of users, Web has not made much progress in nature. HTML 5 takes this into account. It currently has some real benefits for Web developers that page viewers will gradually enjoy as browsers slowly upgrade.
