iPod owners who receive replacement iPod devices during Apple repairs will no longer receive devices with engraved patterns, and only models without engraved patterns will be distributed to customers without reapplying personalized messages.

The engraving option on Apple mobile devices gives customers a way to personalize gifts and identify them when they are lost. If a defective iPad, AirPods, Apple Pencil, or iPod is brought to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, the copied personalization information will be rewritten if the problem cannot be resolved.

In an internal memo to Apple's licensed service providers, Apple changed its policy this week to apply only to the iPod line. Under the new policy, replacement parts will no longer be engraved with the same information as the original parts, which were previously made directly from.

This change will affect iPod touch and iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod classic repairs. AirPods, iPads and the second generation Apple Pencil with engraving are not affected by the new rules.

Apple still offers engraving products in its online store, although replacement models of iPod touch don't work with engraving.
