Dispatch uses Rancher to provide a highly available, real-time communication and tracking platform for domestic service professionals.

Everything you need for microservices

To ensure that the Dispatch platform keeps pace with growing demand, the company decided to implement microservices as soon as possible. "Microservices allow us to expand independently, and if we want swap out, we can do it at any time," explains Jason Raede, director of research and development at Dispatch. "We don't have to deploy on a large scale."

Dispatch's team started using containers in the summer of 2015, but early on encountered some network and communication challenges between services on different servers. That's when they stumbled upon Rancher. "Rancher provides us with everything we need for a micro-service architecture," Raede explained. "Rancher can handle almost everything, service discovery, auto scaling, rolling deployment, configuration management, and so on."

High frequency and high automation deployment

Today, Raede and his team are responsible for more than 40 services in a production environment and deploy a new version of one of these services on average every day. The company uses Rancher and a variety of other tools with infrastructure, including some products from Datadog and AWS, to automate the deployment of new versions.

"I am very confident when I deploy these things every day," Raede said. "the worst-case scenario is that we have to roll back. If one of our services fails, we just need to roll back in Rancher, and everything will be all right."

A more lean and efficient team

Dispatch has about a dozen engineers who use Rancher to make the whole team more lean and efficient. According to Raede, "Rancher allows the work of five or six people to be done by one person."that person" is Leo Bautista, a development and operation engineer at Dispatch, who says "everything is much faster" after using Rancher. With just a few mouse clicks, you can easily roll back deployed capabilities and reduce the workload of QA engineers.

In addition, Rancher allows Raede and Bautista to give R & D team members access to different levels of corporate infrastructure. Raede and Bautista can manage these licenses through the role-based access Control feature of Rancher. Front-end engineers can work in the sandbox environment during the development process, while other members of the product team can access the logs for troubleshooting.

Highly available and always online service platform

Finally, Rancher helps Dispatch provide a highly available platform designed to handle tens of thousands of requests per minute, involving all business people engaged in on-site service.

"A lot of people are slowly turning to the service industry for a living," Jason Raede explains. "We need to make sure they get their jobs and update everyone's real-time status."

"We are very concerned about our customers, as well as our customers' customers. If our product crashes, it means that someone's refrigerator or air conditioner is not working," Bautista said. "but with Rancher," he added, "everything will always work."
