Recently, the author saw in the SEO director group that a friend's website encountered such a problem: the website changed a new domain name and made 301 redirects, but after a period of time, the ranking of the old domain name was transferred to the new domain name, while the ranking of the new domain name gradually declined (more and more serious), and the ranking did not recover after half a year.

The 301 I experienced

This reminds me of the 301 I once did, when I was in charge of SEO in Huatu, and I needed to switch the old domain name to a new double domain name in order to upgrade the brand. To this end, I have done a lot of preparatory work. Unexpectedly, the structure is still very tragic. After the 301 redirection, the estimated traffic of chinaz dropped from 150000 to less than 50, 000, which can be described as a heavy loss.

Analyze and solve problems

After the analysis, it was found that the keyword ranking did not decline immediately after 301, but almost all of it was transferred to the new domain name, and then began to decline after a month or two, and began to become more and more serious. 1. There are a large number of absolute addresses of old domain names on the template, resulting in a large number of export links after switching new domain names.

2. There are a large number of dead links on very old pages.

Then, we made the following solutions and began to save them:

1. Modify the template, replace the old address with the new address, and regenerate all pages.

2. Replace the template of the old column with the new template, and regenerate all pages.

3. Arrange the external chain specialist to contact each link and modify it into a new domain name.

4. In addition, continue to strengthen the exchange of new friend chains.

Reflection on 301 redirection

Today, I encountered similar problems with other friends, so I reflected on the whole process: thinking about what caused the decline in the ranking after the 301 redirection. It is found that the first and second problems mentioned above appeared a long time ago, not in 301, so I think it is caused by a large number of links after 301.

So, what is the reason for the massive decline in links after 301 redirection? The reason is very simple: because after 301, many friendly link sites are our old domain name, and the weight of the old domain name will gradually become 0 (on the webmaster tool). So at this time, many friendly links will think that our website has been lowered and the link will be revoked. At this time, it is not the minority, but the majority, who think that our website has been dropped and the link is revoked. Therefore, at this time, the loss of links is very heavy.

From this, I speculate a conclusion: the more links in the old domain name, the greater the impact on the ranking after 301 redirection; if there are no links (most of them are natural links), there will be almost no impact.

The correct strategy for 301 redirection

Many friends have said that any website to do 301 redirection will have a loss, just the size of the loss. We have developed the following strategy based on my experience. If a friend is about to change the domain name for the website, you might as well refer to it, which may help you minimize the loss. The correct steps are:

1. Resolve the old domain name and the new domain name at the same time, and keep them in parallel for a period of time until the new domain name hijacks the PR of the old domain name (the purpose is to facilitate the replacement of the friendly link with our new domain name)

2. Verify the new and old domain names on Baidu webmaster platform and prepare for 301.

3. When the new domain name gets PR, operate 301 on the server, and then set 301 on Baidu webmaster platform.

4. Check all the pages, change the old domain name to the new domain name, and modify all the dead links.

5. After the Baidu weight of the new domain name is almost restored, contact all the links immediately and ask the other party to change it to a new domain name.
