In this issue, the editor will bring you about how to remove MongoDB from RedHat. The article is rich in content and analyzes and narrates it from a professional point of view. I hope you can get something after reading this article.
Because of MongoDB's new server-side public license (SSPL), Red Hat will not use MongoDB in Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Fedora.
There is a problem with MongoDB, an open source documentation NoSQL database. Although it is very popular, cloud computing companies such as AWS, IBM Cloud, Scalegrid and ObjectRocket have made a lot of money by offering MongoDB as a service, while MongoDB has been unable to cash it out for a long time and has been equally successful in the market. What is MongoDB's answer? Let this software adopt the new server-side public license (SSPL) instead. What is the reaction of the open source giant Red Hat? Remove MongoDB from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.
Tom Callaway, Red Hat's technical and community outreach program manager, explained in a statement announcing the removal of MongoDB from Fedora Linux: "Fedora believes that SSPL is deliberately designed to discriminate severely against certain categories of users." Debian Linux has removed MongoDB from its distribution.
Specifically, the objection is that if you offer a service under the SSPL license, SSPL requires you to open source the software as a service to provide all the programs you use. Steve Ballmer, the chief executive of Microsoft, famously warned that Linux's GPL was "a cancer attached to everything it touches from an intellectual property perspective," he was wrong. But SSPL explicitly tried to do so.
Eliot Horowitz, technical officer and co-founder of MongoDB, explained this during the Open Source Initiative (OSI) discussion around SSPL: we believe that in today's world, connections have been provided by programs as a service and replaced by network connectors as the main form of program integration. It is not clear whether the existing anti-copyright (copyleft) license is explicitly applicable to this form of program combination, and we intend to make SSPL an option for developers to eliminate this uncertainty.
It didn't work. Callaway continued: in addition, it is clear that the intention of the license author is to create fear, uncertainty and FUD among business users of licensed software. Treating SSPL as "free" or "open source" causes this shadow to be cast on all other licenses in the FOSS ecosystem, even if none of these licenses pose this risk.
Previously, OSI refused to declare SSPL an open source license. The proposed SSPLv2 is also stagnant at OSI.
The commercial starting point behind MongoDB's license change is to force cloud computing companies to use one of MongoDB's commercial cloud products. It didn't work either.
AWS has just launched DocumentDB, a database "designed to be compatible with your existing MongoDB applications and tools," wrote Jeff Barr, an AWS propagandist. "it is compatible with MongoDB version 3.6 launched in November 2017 (SSPL was not used at the time) and implements MongoDB 3.6API by simulating the expected response of the MongoDB client from the MongoDB server."
MongoDB is not satisfied with this. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so it's not surprising that Amazon is trying to take advantage of MongoDB's popularity and momentum," said Dev Ittycheria, CEO of MongoDB. "but developers are smart enough to distinguish between real innovation and poor imitation."
Is that true? MongoDB's attempt to generate revenue through SSPL seems to have backfired. Now it's not just cloud computing companies that are disagreeing. Even Linux vendors are not giving MongoDB a good face.
As Devrim G ü nd ü z, a systems engineer at EnterpriseDB, said: "I do understand why MongoDB decided to switch to SSPL. It's really frustrating to see that super cloud service providers make much more money from popular open source projects than contributors to developing and maintaining them." But Bruce Perens, one of the founders of the open source project, says no one is stopping "you use any license. Just don't call it open source."
