Loyal Substack readers can now keep all subscriptions in a dedicated location: the new Substack reader application. The application is currently only available on iOS; Android users can register for a waiting list.

This stand-alone application pulls all users' newsletter subscriptions into an inbox and places them next to a discovery tab for readers to find new publications. Podcasts and video subscriptions can be accessed in the application, as can the comments section. Users can also add RSS feeds to the application.

"the application helps integrate Substack into an ecosystem, providing you with an icon that you can click on on the home screen, thus opening a treasure trove of quality works by your most trusted writers," the company wrote.

Some of the features in the application are designed to help readers find new publications. Next to the inbox is a "discovery" label that provides advice to readers by cultural, political and sports categories. The featured "this week" section includes newsletters from Patti Smith, Bari Weiss and others.

The application is also a far cry from e-mail: users of the application can pause e-mail delivery of newsletters instead of choosing to receive only mobile notifications. Substack said that if the reader stops using the application, the email will recover automatically.

In the statement, Substack stands in stark contrast to other platforms such as Craigslist, Google and Facebook, which "erode the media business and deprive writers and other cultural manufacturers of their economic dignity". The company positions itself as a place where writers can fully own their own works and mailing lists-it's easy for them to leave if they want. However, the application makes Substack a more centralized publisher, and the platform is as important as the writing infrastructure it provides.

Although the application is more reader-oriented (for example, authors cannot draft posts in it), Substack stresses that the application also benefits authors, especially in terms of increasing their audience. But while readers can subscribe to new publications through the app, they cannot upgrade to a paid subscription or automatically subscribe at a paid level, presumably to avoid Apple's 30% in-app purchase fee. Subscriptions can be updated online through the publication page in the application.
