ERP and MES are important parts of manufacturing enterprise management information system, they seem to have very similar places, but there are great differences in management direction, mainly reflected in the following six aspects:

Management objectives are different.
The focus of ERP is on finance, that is, to plan the resources of the enterprise from a financial point of view, the relevant modules are also carried out with finance as the core, and the final management data are also concentrated on the financial statements. MES focuses on manufacturing, which aims at product quality, just-in-time delivery, equipment utilization, process control and so on. Because different enterprises have different management priorities, when choosing the composition of the information system, the focus is also different. Group companies, commercial enterprises and logistics enterprises pay more attention to ERP management, while manufacturing enterprises need MES more.

The scope of management is different
The scope of ERP management is larger than that of MES, and MES management is finer than ERP. As a part of enterprise resources, enterprise production resources are also within the scope of ERP management, and there are corresponding functional modules such as production planning, data collection, quality management, material management and so on, so they are often confused with MES. But the scope of ERP management is mainly based on the work center, MES can be more detailed to each manufacturing process, each process for task assignment, execution control and data collection, on-site scheduling. The main function of ERP in manufacturing management is to make production plans and collect production data. In addition to refining production planning and collecting production data, MES also has batch-level production control and scheduling management functions, such as batch-level process changes, verification control of manufacturing equipment, personnel and materials, batch splitting, merging, batch production order changes and other on-site scheduling functions.

It is implemented in different ways
ERP is mainly managed by filling out the form and throwing the form. The manufacturing tasks received on the site are communicated through the form, and the on-site manufacturing data are also collected by filling in the form. MES uses the way of event management, the change of production order and the manufacturing situation on the spot. Through the built-in WIP engine of MES, it immediately triggers the relevant event and requires the relevant personnel or equipment to take corresponding action. Therefore, MES can reduce the work of data input, reduce errors, and improve timeliness.

The time period of management is different
It is precisely because MES adopts the WIP engine to drive the management, which can achieve the "real-time management" of the site: the superior production plan and production scheduling can be immediately reflected in the operation interface of the manufacturing site, and the on-site production data and anomalies can also be reflected in the supervision interface of the management position, which makes timely scheduling possible. The form mode of ERP will inevitably have an input cycle, so there will be a lag of two input cycles in production scheduling, which may affect the production with short manufacturing cycle.

Differences in working methods
In order to realize the real-time control and scheduling of the manufacturing site, some changes will take place in the working methods on the spot. When there is no information system, the working method is to obtain the production order or production progress from the production planning department, and report the production situation to the superior on the order sheet or batch transfer sheet after completing the on-site operation. The ERP approach is similar, except that the interfaces between the manufacturing site and the production management department are connected through an information system. However, after using the MES system, the instructions and data collection at the work site are realized through the information system.
From the above six angles, we can see that MES and ERP not only have differences but also have many relations. Only by combining the two organically and performing their respective duties can we bring the best management efficiency and economic benefits to the enterprise.
