Facebook's stance on facial recognition has changed recently, but its past enthusiasm for the technology may be stronger than previously thought. Business Insider has learned (subscription required) that Facebook developed an internal mobile app in 2015 and 2016 that uses facial recognition to identify colleagues and friends. Just point your phone at someone and get their name and profile photo. It helps if you want to remember the names of coworkers you met at parties.

Business Intelligence claims that a version of the app can identify anyone with enough Facebook data, but the company says that's not the case. A spokesperson said in a statement to CNET that the app can only detect employees and friends "with facial recognition enabled." The app is "a way to learn new technology," the spokesperson added.

This app has been deactivated, and it's likely you won't hear similar messages again. Facebook recently turned to privacy, avoiding facial recognition. There is also a small legal issue. The Social networks are dealing with a class-action lawsuit over an allegation of unauthorized collection of facial recognition data, allegedly in violation of Illinois 'Biometric Information Privacy Act. Increasing regulatory pressure by writing facial recognition apps, such as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Facebook, may be reluctant to take risks, but they have limited uses.
