Software test management is one of the familiar software testing career development routes, and the more popular settings include test team leader, test manager, test representative, test supervisor, test director, test minister and so on. The scope of work of the same position may be slightly different in different companies, which can be roughly divided into the following three levels according to the level of management.

1. Junior software test manager: test team leader

The test team leader is usually served by a test engineer with about two years of working experience.

Due to differences in enterprise size and product complexity, the test team leader may manage 2 or 5 software test engineers. Generally speaking, the test team leader is not responsible for the entire product, but only for one or more of the features.

The test team leader is not a complete manager. Most of the management work they are engaged in focuses on the formulation and implementation of the test plan; in product testing, they are often responsible for testing the key and difficult points of the product; in addition, they are also responsible for bringing new employees so that the testing work can go on smoothly.

2. Intermediate software test manager: test manager, test representative, test supervisor

Test managers, test representatives and test supervisors all belong to intermediate software test managers, generally by test engineers with about 4 years of work experience.

The intermediate software test manager is responsible for the product and may manage 10 to 20 software test engineers (including test team leaders).

The most important task of the intermediate software test manager is to run the test project, formulate and execute the test plan, evaluate the product quality and give product release suggestions after the test. To do these well, they need to master more project management knowledge, in-depth understanding of project value, and do a good job in project scope management, quality management, cost management, time management, risk management and manpower management. In addition, they also have to work closely with developers, marketers and service personnel, during which the ability of communication and coordination is essential.

They are still the backbone of product testing, or will be responsible for the key and difficult work of product testing, so they are not pure managers.

3. Senior Software Test Manager: test Director, Test Minister

Test director and test department are senior managers of software testing, who generally have more than 10 years of software testing experience, and are responsible for the product line or company.

Senior software test managers need to understand the business goals of the product and be directly responsible for the success of the product. They need to be responsible for the development of the test team, recruit and train personnel, retain key talents, improve or update unqualified personnel, enhance the team's competency and professional ability, and be responsible for project financial management (budget and control). Responsible for resource planning and allocation; continuously improve testing capabilities, improve efficiency and product quality, and be responsible for the cost, cycle and quality of delivered products from a testing perspective.
