Apple's health app automatically tracks your steps and other health data, but Boston Children's Hospital wants to use its iOS app Feverprints to help you track another vital sign: your temperature.

The normal temperature of 37 degrees is not suitable for everyone. What Feverprints does is use large amounts of anonymous data to understand the range of temperature changes in the body throughout the day, so as to better care for and diagnose fever.

"We want to give people a better understanding of how normal body temperature varies throughout the day, to learn about fever as a diagnostic tool, and to assess the effectiveness of antipyretics in the course of illness and disease. Feverprints project director Jared Hawkins said in a statement.

But the app doesn't do everything for you. You still have to enter your temperature several times a day. But it will alert you when it needs to be entered and anonymize your data. After enough temperature data has been collected, the team says, defining "unique temperature patterns" could help diagnose infections or determine the actual effectiveness of antipyretics.
