Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--
Windows for disk management, can provide dynamic disk, RAID (0, 1, 5) support. Compared with the software RAID support provided by the hardware RAID,Windows, because the hardware RAID has raid cards, the read and write performance of the software RAID is much worse than that of the hardware RAID, and there are fewer kinds of RAID supported.
All of the following operations are done under Vmware Workstation, which is done through the hard disk of the virtual machine.
The operating system of the virtual computer is Windows Server 2008 R2.
I. MBR disk and GPT disk
MBR disk: its disk partition table is stored in MBR (Master Boot record). MBR is located at the front end of the disk. When the computer starts, the BIOS on the motherboard reads the MBR first and gives control of the computer to MBR.
A MBR disk can create up to 4 primary partitions, or 3 primary partitions plus an extended partition. The extended partition can be divided into multiple logical partitions.
GPT disk: its disk partition table is stored in the GPT partition table, it is also located at the front of the disk, and it has disk partition and backup partition table to provide troubleshooting function. GPT disk acts as a bridge between computer hardware and operating system through EFI.
One GPT disk can create 128primary partitions. Because there can be up to 128primary partitions, GPT disks do not need to expand partitions. Partitions larger than 2TB must use GPT disks.
The user may convert these two types of disks to and from each other.
The following is the process of converting a basic disk to a dynamic disk through disk Management (Diskmgmt.msc).
Right-click disk 0 (including system partition and boot partition) and select convert to dynamic disk)
Note: 1. By default, only the administrator group or the Backup Operators group has the right to perform the conversion operation.
2. All running programs must be closed before conversion
3. Not all Windows operating systems support dynamic volumes, such as Windows 7 and Vista Home Edition.
4. Once converted to a dynamic disk, it cannot be directly converted to a basic disk, unless all volumes in the disk are deleted first, that is, an empty disk can be converted to a basic disk.
5. When multiple operating systems are installed in a basic disk, do not convert the basic disk into a dynamic disk, otherwise only the current operating system can boot and other operating systems cannot boot.
Basic disk and dynamic disk
The basic disk is a traditional disk system, and the hard disk installed by default under Windows is the basic disk.
Each primary or logical partition within a basic disk is also called a basic volume.
Dynamic disks support a variety of special volumes (cross-zone, striped, mirrored, etc.), some of which can improve access efficiency, some can provide debugging capabilities, and sometimes a large amount of disk space.
III. Operation of basic disk
Users can compress and expand volumes for basic volumes.
Expand the basic volume, that is, the unallocated space, into the basic volume to expand its capacity. "however, when extending a volume, you need to be aware of the following:"
Only volumes that have not yet been formatted or have been formatted into NTFS can be extended, and FAT and FAT32 cannot be extended; at the same time, the newly added space must be the last allocated space immediately following this basic volume.
IV. Dynamic disk
Windows dynamic disks support the following dynamic volumes:
1. Simple volume: it is the basic unit of a dynamic volume, and its status is equivalent to that of the primary partition in the basic disk.
2. Spanned volume: it needs 32 disks, which can be used to store data with the capacity of all disks. Compared with a single disk, its performance does not change, and it does not provide fault tolerance.
3. Striped volume: also known as RAID0, it needs 32 disks, which can be used to store data with the capacity of all disks. Compared with a single disk, its read and write performance is improved, but it does not provide fault tolerance.
4. Mirrored volume: also known as RAID1, it requires 2 disks, which can be used to store data with half the capacity of all disks. Compared with a single disk, it has improved read performance and provides fault tolerance.
5. Raid-5 volume: 32 disks are required, which can be used to store data with a total disk capacity of 1 disk. Compared with a single disk, it has much better read and write performance and provides fault tolerance.
Fifth, the operation of simple volumes
Before the disk operation, the disk must be online and initialized.
(add a hard disk to the virtual machine for testing, with a size of 10G)
1. Online
2. Initialize
Select initialization disk, select partition form
3. Create a new simple volume
Right-click the newly added disk and select New simple Volume
Enter the size (to familiarize yourself with functions such as expanding volumes, enter 5000MB here, that is, there is still room for last use)
Assign a drive, or you can attach this volume to another NTFS folder, or you can not assign a drive.
Choose whether to format (note that only the NTFS file system allows expansion of volumes and enables file and folder compression)
4. Expand the volume
Only volumes that have not yet been formatted or have been formatted to NTFS can be extended, and volumes for FAT and FAT32 cannot be extended.
The newly added space (expanded space) can be the unallocated space of the same disk or the unallocated space of another disk. When extended into the unallocated space of another disk, this volume becomes a spanned volume.
Enter the size of the expansion space (that is, the increased size)
5. Compressed volume
6. Delete Volume
Delete the basic volume so that the volume becomes unallocated space.
See disk management under Windows (2), disk management under Windows (3), disk management under Windows (4).
