The content of this article mainly focuses on how to understand vCenter Server and host management. the content of the article is clear and clear. It is very suitable for beginners to learn and is worth reading. Interested friends can follow the editor to read together. I hope you can get something through this article!

VCenter Server and host management

A vCenter Server connection

When connecting to vCenter Server using vSphere Client, you can manage all hosts and virtual machines managed by vCenter Server and its management

1 run VMware vSphere Client

Log in locally as administrator; enter IP address or vCenter Server name; enter Windows administrator user name; enter Windows administrator password

2 when you connect to vCenter Server for the first time after installation, there are no objects in the list

Host management

Create a data center: it is equivalent to a container, and hosts in the same data center can be clustered.

1 Click to create a data center and enter a name

Add hosts: add ESXi hosts to the data center

1 right-click the newly created data center, select add Host, enter the host name or IP address, enter the username and password, and click next (ESXi host username and password)

2 Click "Yes" in the security alert dialog box

3 confirm the host summary information, and click next

4 enter the license, so vCenter Server is in evaluation mode, click next

5 Select a location from the list of list objects, and then click next

6 Click finish to finish adding hosts

Create a virtual machine:

1 Click hosts and clusters on the vCenter Server home page.

2 in the list (Inventory) panel, select the host.

3 Click create a new virtual machine on the getting started tab.

4 Select a typical, and then click next.

5 Type the name of the virtual machine, select the inventory location, and then click next.

6 Select the datastore in which you want to store virtual machine files, and then click next (the datastore must be large enough to store the virtual machine and all its virtual disk files)

7 under the client operating system, select the operating system family (Microsoft Windows, Linux, or other), and then select the version from the drop-down list.

This is the operating system for virtual machines. Choose based on how you plan to use the virtual machine.

Note that the wizard does not install the client operating system. The New Virtual Machine wizard uses this information to select the appropriate default values, such as the amount of memory required.

8 leave the default network configuration and click next.

9 specify the size of the virtual disk, select thin Settings, and then click next.

Enter the disk size in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). The virtual disk must be large enough to hold the client operating system and all the software planned to be installed, as well as make room for data and data growth.

10 on the "ready to complete New Virtual Machine" page, review your selections, and then click finish to create a new virtual machine

After creating the virtual machine, install the client operating system and VMware Tools on it

Three templates and clones

The template is the master copy of the virtual machine and can be used to create and set up the virtual machine. The template cannot be started or edited.

You must be connected to a vCenter Server to clone a virtual machine. You cannot clone a virtual machine if you connect directly to an ESXi host

You can customize the client operating system that clones the virtual machine to change the virtual machine name, network settings, and other properties. This prevents conflicts when deploying virtual machines and cloned virtual machines with the same client operating system settings

To customize the client operating system of the virtual machine, check that the client operating system meets the custom requirements. The details are as follows:

Windows requirements

Customizing the Windows client operating system requires the following conditions:

Microsoft Sysprep tools must be installed on the vCenter Server system

The ESXi host on which the virtual machine is running must be version 3.5 or later.

Linux requirements

Customizing the Linux client operating system requires that Perl is installed in the Linux client operating system.

VMware Tools requirements

To customize the client operating system during cloning or deployment, the latest version of VMware Tools must be installed on a virtual machine or template.

Virtual disk requirement

The custom client operating system must be installed on a disk connected as a SCSI node in the virtual machine configuration at 0:0

Clone a virtual machine

1 right-click the virtual machine and select Clone.

2 enter a virtual machine name and select a location, and then click next.

3 Select the host or cluster on which you want to run the new virtual machine

4 Select the resource pool in which you want to run the virtual machine, and then click next.

5 Select the data storage location where you want to store virtual machine files

6 Select the format applicable to the virtual machine disk, and then click next

7 Select the client operating system customization option

8 Review your choices, and then choose whether to power on the virtual machine or edit the virtual machine settings

The cloned virtual machine will be deployed. You cannot use or edit a virtual machine until the clone is complete. If cloning involves creating a virtual disk, cloning may take several minutes. You can cancel cloning at any time before the customization phase

Convert a virtual machine to a template

After converting a virtual machine to a template, you cannot edit or start the template unless you convert the template back to the virtual machine

Before converting a virtual machine to a template, select the virtual machine in the list and power it off

1 right-click the virtual machine and select template > convert to template

Clone a virtual machine as a template

Cloning a virtual machine as a template creates a template copy of the virtual machine while leaving the original virtual machine in its original location

1 right-click the virtual machine and select template > Clone as template.

2 name the new template and select its list location, and then click next.

3 pass the target location page, and then click next.

4 specify the storage format of the virtual disk for the template, and then click next

5 Select the data storage location where you want to store the virtual machine files.

6 Click finish

Deploy a virtual machine from a template

Deploying a virtual machine from a template creates a new virtual machine that is a copy of the template. The new virtual machine has virtual hardware configured for the template, installed software, and other properties

1 right-click the template and select deploy virtual machine from that template.

2 enter a virtual machine name and select a location, and then click next.

3 Select the host or cluster on which you want to run the new virtual machine.

4 Select the resource pool in which you want to run the virtual machine, and then click next.

5 Select the data storage location where you want to store the virtual machine files.

6 Select the format applicable to the virtual machine disk, and then click next.

7 Select the client operating system customization option.

8 Review your choices, and then choose whether to power on the virtual machine or edit the virtual machine settings.

A virtual machine has been deployed. You cannot use or edit a virtual machine until the deployment is complete. If deployment involves creating virtual disks, deployment may take several minutes

Four vSphere Web client server

Use web pages to manage virtual machines

1 install vSphere Web client server

2 after the installation is complete, find the vSphere Web client server management tool in the start menu, and click Registration in the upper right corner.

3 register; enter the local IP at the bottom

4 Open vSphere Web client (start-all programs-Vmware- vSphere Client) and log in. Other operations are similar to vSphere Client.
