1. introduced

SQL Server 2017 AlwaysOn availability groups for Linux platforms can be broken down into three scenarios:

Created for high availability

Pacemaker is required to build Linux clusters, availability groups on Linux clusters require CLUSTER_TYPE = EXTERNAL.

created for read zoom only

Linux cluster configuration is not required, availability group is set to CLUSTER_TYPE = NONE. It cannot support high availability.

Configuration across platforms (Windows and Linux)

For migration to another platform. Availability group is set to CLUSTER_TYPE = NONE. This configuration does not support high availability because there is no clustered solution to manage cross-platform configurations.
