When considering deploying a super-converged architecture, many enterprises tend to use flexible hardware configurations rather than just one brand. SmartX super-converged solution provides two delivery modes: Halo all-in-one machine and SMTX OS pure software, which can better meet the needs of different users. SmartX's "SMTX OS hardware selection recommendation Guide" (hereinafter referred to as "the Guide") is designed for users who choose SMTX OS software solutions, and aims to provide a reference from a professional point of view to help users choose their own hardware products more specifically and make super-converged hardware configuration easier.

The Guide includes three parts: stand-alone hardware configuration, hardware resource reservation scheme and expansion selection. The first two issues excerpted the references of CPU selection and memory selection in stand-alone hardware configuration. This issue continues to share with you the contents related to storage in stand-alone hardware configuration-solid state disk SSD and mechanical hard drive HDD chapter.

Storage of stand-alone hardware configuration

SSD selection of solid state disk

1. Interface recommendation

SSD is divided into SATA, SAS and U.2 NVMe interfaces. At present, SATA 3.0 interface rate is 600 MBps,SAS 3.0 interface rate is 1200 MBps,U.2 NVMe generally uses PCIe 3.0 x 4, interface rate is 3.938 GB/s.

NVMe SSD is the fastest, but the cost is also relatively high, and the price of SAS SSD is also more expensive. The same investment is not as good as the benefit of buying NVMe SSD. If considering the cost, SAS SSD is not recommended, but if you do not consider the cost or the existing equipment, that is, SAS SSD,SAS SSD has better performance than SATA SSD, it is also worth considering the application of SAS SSD.

Based on the above, SSD, which is still the mainstream SATA interface, is recommended.

two。 Quantity recommendation

At least 2 yuan. The first two partitions of the 2 SSD will form a soft RAID, and OS, Zookeeper and MetaServer will be placed to ensure their security, and the rest of the space will be used as Journal and Cache. 2 SSD (2 × 6 Gbps) can ensure sufficient bandwidth to match 10 Gigabit network (10 Gb).

3. Capacity recommendation

The total capacity of SSD should be kept at 10-20% of the total capacity of HDD. For example, if the total capacity of HDD is 12 TB, it is recommended that SSD choose 2 pieces of 960 GB.

4. Type recommendation

At the application level, SSD is mainly divided into three types: Read-intensive (read-intensive), Mixed read/write (read-write mixture) and Write-intensive (write-intensive).

Read-intensive SSD is mainly used in boot disk, Web server, data analysis and other applications; read-write hybrid SSD is suitable for cache, high-speed storage and other applications; write-intensive SSD is more suitable for high-performance computing (HPC), high-definition imaging and video (HDIV), high data rate analysis and database applications.

The read-write ratio of some typical applications is as follows:

The theoretical performance comparison between Intel S4510 read-intensive SSD and Intel S4610 read-write hybrid SSD is as follows:

Comparison of theoretical performance between Intel S4510 read-intensive SSD and Intel S4610 read-write hybrid SSD

It can be seen that the sequential read and write performance is basically the same, and the random read performance is basically the same, but the read-intensive S4510 SSD random write performance is about 30% lower than the read-write mixed S4610 SSD random write performance (nominal value).

DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day) is generally used to measure the life of a SSD. DWPD refers to the number of full SSD writes per day during the warranty period. The more times, the longer the SSD life, which also means that the price is more expensive. Write-intensive SSD is the mainstream SSD in the market because of its long write life and high price. Read-intensive and read-write mixed SSD are the mainstream SSD in the market.

Each SSD manufacturer has SSD models for different types. The DWPD of read-intensive SSD is basically 0-2, such as Intel S4510 and Samsung PM883, and the DWPD of read-write mixed SSD is basically 3-5. It is recommended to choose read-write mixed SSD. If you must choose read-intensive SSD, it is recommended that you choose SSD with DWPD > 1.

The list of mainstream SSD is as follows:

Mainstream SSD capacity corresponds to DWPD

To sum up, the overall recommendations of SSD are as follows:

API: SATA for higher performance-to-price ratio.

Quantity: at least 2 pieces, to meet security and improve performance, to ensure that 2 pieces of SSD have the same model and capacity as far as possible.

Capacity: the total capacity of SSD should be 10%-20% of the total capacity of HDD to provide the best ratio.

DWPD:3-5.

Mechanical hard disk HDD selection

1. Quantity and capacity recommendation

Considering the concurrency performance of HDD, it is recommended to choose a large number of HDD configurations. In addition, considering the speed of single disk failure recovery, low single disk capacity HDD is recommended. For example, the total capacity requirement of 8T 4 x 2T scheme is better than 2 x 4T scheme, and 2 x 4T scheme is better than 1 x 8T scheme.

The overall capacity requirements generally come from customer requirements. In the case of considering the reservation, it is recommended to choose more than 4 HDD configurations as far as possible. For the choice of single disk capacity, generally 2.5 "HDD capacity is not more than 2.4T HDD 3.5" capacity range is relatively large, from 1T to 14T.

two。 Interface and speed recommendation

At present, HDD is mainly divided into SATA and SAS interface, SATA HDD general speed is 7200 rpm, SAS HDD speed is divided into 7200 rpm, 10000 rpm and 15000 rpm, the higher the speed, the faster the reading and writing speed. High speed HDD is recommended to ensure performance, and low speed HDD is recommended to reduce cost.

3. Mainstream HDD list

The list of mainstream HDD is as follows:

Mainstream HDD list

To sum up, the overall recommendations of HDD are as follows:

Quantity: greater than or equal to 4.

Capacity: select the capacity of a single disk according to the overall capacity requirements.

Interface, rotational speed: high speed disk can be selected when performance is priority, and low speed disk can be selected when cost is priority.

4K disk is not supported.
