Rancher 1.4 has been fully released! As always, we recommend that you fully understand the latest version of Rancher through Releases Notes on Rancher GitHub. Here, however, we would like to focus on several significant changes in the new version and the reasons behind them.

Dashboard and Helm

To continue to move towards a better Kubernetes experience, we replaced Rancher Kubernetes UI with Dashboard and Catalog Kubernetes templates with Helm. Dashboard and Helm have achieved great success over the past year, and we believe they have achieved production stability and can compete functionally with the products they replace. One of the goals of Rancher Labs is to support mainstream container technologies from beginning to end, and integrating Dashboard and Helm is a natural part of this concept.

Webhooks

As container usage grows, so does the need for webhooks, as both are well suited for optimizing infrastructure use. In Rancher 1.4, webhooks can serve as its own micro-service, as well as an initial driver for auto-scaling. There will be another blog post on this in more detail soon, and we are pleased to start working with the community on webhooks, especially on new drivers and features.

Network strategy

Starting with 1.4, we will provide more detailed network policy control in the environment. We will start by letting users set basic ALLOW or DENY default policies for container network access, and each subsequent release will implement more features, such as allowing inter-service access but denying intra-service communication.

Secret management

In 1. 4, we also introduced Vault Transit to handle encrypted data in Rancher. Previously, users could manage ciphertext using third-party solutions in Rancher Catalog, but as more and more users use Rancher and containers in production, it makes sense to build this feature directly into our platform.
