SDN application

SDN applications explicitly communicate their network requirements and desired network behavior to the SDN controller directly and programmatically through the northbound interface (NBI). In addition, they may consume an abstract view of the network for internal decisions. A SDN application consists of a SDN application logic and one or more NBI drivers. The SDN application itself may expose another layer of abstract network control, providing one or more higher-level NBI through their respective NBI agents.

SDN controller

The SDN controller is a logically centralized entity responsible for translating SDN application requirements into SDN data paths and providing SDN applications with an abstract view of the network (which may include statistics and events). The SDN controller consists of one or more NBI agents, SDN control logic and control layer to data layer interface (CDPI) drivers. The definition as a logical centralized entity neither prescribes nor excludes implementation details, such as federation of multiple controllers, hierarchical connectivity of controllers, communication interfaces between controllers, and slicing of virtualization or network resources.

SDN data path

SDN data path is a logical network device that can provide visibility and uncontroversial control over its advertising forwarding and data processing functions. The logical representation can include all or a subset of physical substrate resources. The SDN data path includes a CDPI agent and a set of one or more traffic forwarding engines and zero or more traffic processing functions. These engines and functions may include simple forwarding between the external interface of the data path or internal traffic processing or termination functions. One or more SDN data paths can be contained in a single (physical) network element-an integrated physical combination of communication resources managed by the unit. SDN data paths can also be defined across multiple physical network elements. This logical definition neither prescribes nor excludes implementation details, such as logical mapping of physical mappings, management of shared physical resources, virtualization or fragmentation of SDN data paths, interoperability with non-SDN networks, and data processing functions, which can include OSI layer 4-7 functions.

Control layer to data layer interface

SDN CDPI is an interface defined between the SDN controller and the SDN data path that provides at least:

Programmatic control of all forwarding operations

Ability advertisement

Statistical report

Event notification.

One of the values of SDN is that CDPI is expected to be implemented in an open, vendor-neutral and interoperable manner.

SDN northbound interface

SDN NBI is the interface between the SDN application and the SDN controller, which usually provides an abstract view of the network and can directly express network behavior and requirements. This can happen between any level of abstraction (latitude) and different feature sets (longitude). One of the values of SDN is that these interfaces are expected to be implemented in an open, vendor-neutral and interoperable manner.
