Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--
Recently, VMware announced the acquisition of Heptio, a startup founded by two co-founders of Kubernetes. This move is also understood as VMware's intention to strengthen the containerization-based architecture and open source ecology. It is worth noting that this seems to be the only acquisition of container technology out of dozens of acquisitions by VMware, and the acquisition of start-up Heptio is unusual.
Heptio, co-founded by Kubernetes co-founders Joe Beda and Craig McLuckie in Seattle, is dedicated to helping enterprises build and run Kubernetes-based container architectures. The two co-founders, who worked on the Google Kubernetes project team in 2014, played a key role in developing Kubernetes. They are also considered to be core founders of Kubernetes and have been active in the Kubernetes community.
The acquisition is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2019, and under the agreement, Joe Beda, Craig McLuckie and their teams will all join VMware.
Kubernetes was open source in 2014 and has since become the tool of choice for managing software containers and is becoming an increasingly important part of the enterprise application infrastructure. Kubenetes is known as the "operating system of cloud computing", which also highlights the core role of Kubernetes in the field of cloud computing.
In fact, this acquisition of VMware, coupled with the recent acquisition of Red Hat by IBM, shows that major IT manufacturers are secretly trying to "capture" the cloud computing market, and containers will become a mainstream track in the future. In particular, Kubernetes makes it easier to run applications across multi-cloud environments, which could shake up the rapid integration of basic cloud services.
Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, said that "Kubernetes will be the new standard for container deployment," adding that the container itself is associated with and built on virtual machines, which is VMware's core business, such as Vsphere. So it is not difficult to understand why VMware's acquisition of Heptio,Heptio 's services will further strengthen and expand VMWare's efforts around PKS and make Kubernetes a de facto standard for cloud infrastructure.
