Bash (GNU Bourne-Again Shell) is the default shell for most Linux systems and Mac OS X, is a Unix shell written for the GNU project, is a program, and is a gnu software. It can run on most Unix-like operating systems, and even be transplanted to the Cygwin system on Microsoft Windows to implement the POSIX virtual interface of Windows. The name of Bash is a series of abbreviations: Bourne-Again SHell-this is a pun about Bourne shell (sh) (Bourne again / born again). Bourne shell is an early and important shell written by Steve Bourne around 1978 and released with Version 7 Unix.

Bash's command syntax is a superset of Bourne shell command syntax. Most of the large number of Bourne shell scripts can be executed in bash without modification, and only scripts that use special variables or built-in commands of Bourne need to be modified. Many of bash's command syntax comes from Korn shell (ksh) and C shell (csh), such as command line editing, command history, directory stack, $RANDOM and $PPID variables, and POSIX's command replacement syntax: $(...). As an interactive shell, press the TAB key to automatically complete partially entered program names, file names, variable names, and so on.
