It is believed that many inexperienced people are at a loss about what is meant by the enhancement of the command line environment in Windows 10. This article summarizes the causes and solutions of the problem. I hope you can solve this problem through this article.

In Windows 10, and in the upcoming Windows Server 2016, Microsoft has made a series of improvements to their standard command-line console program, greatly increasing its availability. Here is a brief list of some of them.

Richer shortcut keys

In the past, copying and pasting in a command-line window was almost painful: selecting requires the left mouse button, while copying requires a right-click operation, or switching to the keyboard's enter key, and pasting with the right mouse button. The problem is that if you are used to using the mouse, you often paste one more copy because of the more right button; if you like to use the keyboard, it is difficult to switch back and forth when performing the copy and paste. There are no useful keyboard shortcuts for pasting when copying content from other applications to the command line window. Anyway, it's just painful.

This has been greatly improved in Windows 10: the new console provides us with a new way of working. Now, when we use the mouse to select, the selection is no longer a forced rectangle, and the selection can wrap; then, we can use Ctrl + C to copy the selection, and Ctrl + V to paste the selection. (please note that pressing Ctrl + C requires caution. If a program is running, the selection can be copied once and the selection will be released immediately; if pressed again, the currently running program will be interrupted.)

At the command prompt, you can also use the Ctrl + M key to enter tag mode, which means you can start the selection; in addition, the Ctrl + F shortcut key is provided at the command prompt to find the contents of the console.

Full screen

In the command line window of Windows 10, you can use Alt + Enter to quickly switch full-screen mode. In the past, we probably could only use simulation commands such as mode 300to make the command line window look like a full screen. Now the new version of the console has built-in support. After entering the full screen, you can only exit the full screen through Alt + Enter, and keys such as Windows or classic F11 are not supported.

PageUp and PageDown screen flipping keys have also been added to the console in Windows 10, but it is measured that in the full-screen mode of PowerShell, there will be a page turning of "command history" in the ordinary command prompt of BUG;. a fly in the ointment.

With the "multi-desktop" function in Windows 10, you can easily add a "command line mode" workspace to your daily work environment by putting the full-screen console on another desktop, and then use Ctrl + Windows and the left and right arrow keys to switch between desktop mode and command line mode.

More available command history

Now, the command history entered in the command line window in Windows can also be retained after the command line window is closed. You can set the number of historical commands to keep, or you can set it to discard previous copies, that is, to clear the command record on exit. Of course, these histories distinguish between specific console programs, and command histories in PowerShell are not mixed with those in command prompt programs.

Translucency

This is arguably the most impractical feature-but maybe some scenarios are useful. The Windows command line environment is now built-in, and a pair of keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl + Shift + (plus sign) and Ctrl + Shift + (minus sign) are provided to adjust console transparency in real time.

Except for the special instructions in the command prompt, the functions described above are also provided in PowerShell, but some keyboard shortcuts such as increasing or decreasing transparency cannot be used. In fact, because it is an upgrade of the system console, not only PowerShell, but all standard consoles have these capabilities.

It should be noted that some new shortcuts may affect the normal operation of some applications that respond to the keyboard, so all of the above functions can be set through the console's Properties window and turn off the corresponding functions. When you change some functions, you need to restart the console program (not the operating system).

The features described above may not be enabled by default on your PC or Server system, just uncheck the "use Legacy console" option in the properties of the command prompt window. For more details on the new console, please refer to the MSDN official materials.
