Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--
Today, David Patterson (David Patterson), Professor Emeritus of Pardee at the University of California, Berkeley, announced at the RISC-V Summit that he will set up a RIOS Lab (English full name RISC-V International Open Source Laboratory) focusing on RISC-V research, located in the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College (TBSI) jointly established by the University of California, Berkeley and Tsinghua University.
Professor David Patterson, as the expert who first proposed the reduced instruction set (RISC) system, is now Pardee Honorary Professor of the School of Electronic Engineering and computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, Honorary Doctor of Tsinghua University, Distinguished engineer of Google, and founder of RISC-V (Fifth Generation reduced instruction set) Foundation.
It is understood that there are three objectives for the establishment of the laboratory:
Comprehensively upgrade the RISC-V ecosystem to the most advanced level (5-year mission)
Become a non-profit organization with the transfer of technological achievements as its main mission
Produce industrial-grade intellectual property results that are exempt from patent litigation
David Patterson (David Patterson) also said that he would be the laboratory director himself, with his disciple Dr. Tan Zhangxi (adjunct professor TBSI) as deputy director. The laboratory currently plans to be made up of 50 full-time engineers and will actively establish links with the law schools of the University of California at Berkeley and Tsinghua University on issues related to intellectual property law. Now the laboratory is actively seeking cooperation between academia and industry, and anyone who has any suggestions can send an email to rios@sz.tsinghua.edu.cn.
At present, the official website of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College has not been announced, but the AI Technology Review of Lei Feng website noticed that the first development on the college's website was a speech entitled "the New Golden era of computer system Architecture: domain-specific hardware / Software Collaborative Design, enhanced Security, Open instruction set and Chip Agile Development" delivered by David Patterson in April this year. Involves a large number of RISC-V-related content.

What is RISC-V?
Originally developed by the Department of computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, RISC-V is a free and open source instruction set architecture (ISA), a new era of processor innovation through open standards collaboration. RISC-V was born in academia and research field, with the following characteristics:
People from many different organizations can contribute to RISC-V at the same time
Its design pays attention to modularization and expansibility.
It comes with a complete software stack, including compilers, operating systems, and debugger, which are open source, so that they can be customized and modified
As a modern ISA, it can be used in a variety of applications from cloud-level servers to mobile and IoT devices
RISC-V is promoted by a foundation of 100 members, which ensures its long-term stability and long-term evolution.
These features provide a higher level of free and scalable software and hardware freedom for computer architecture, paving the way for computing design and innovation in the next 50 years.
Attached: brief introduction of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College (TBSI)
Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College (TBSI) is jointly established by Tsinghua University and Berkeley University of California with the support of Shenzhen Municipal Government. Adhering to the concepts of "interdisciplinary", "internationalization" and "industrial partnership", Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College (abbreviated as Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College) is committed to exploring the training model of "university-government-enterprise" tripartite cooperation.
It is understood that TBSI will face the global economic and social development, closely meet the needs of Shenzhen's development, establish three major interdisciplinary research centers and 18 laboratories around environmental science and new energy technology, data science and information technology, precision medicine and public health, integrate the high-quality scientific research and educational resources of the two universities, and build an international and innovative talent education and research system. We will actively respond to and solve the major scientific and technological problems and social development problems facing the region and even the whole world.
TBSI is mainly located in Shenzhen Nanshan Zhiyuan and Shenzhen Graduate School of Tsinghua University, and conducts research and teaching on two campuses of Shenzhen and Berkeley University of California.
