In the past few years, we have had laptops that support 4G LTE connections, including several Windows devices on the ARM. Now that operators have lit up the 5G network, laptop suppliers are likely to launch 5G models that are always connected. Chip maker MediaTek is making sure they have the right components to do this. The company launched a next-generation solution for 5G devices earlier on Tuesday, including modems that will provide 5G connectivity for the next generation of networked laptops and high-end chips that will power some flagship smartphones next year.

The Dimensity 1000 is MediaTek's first 5G7nm SoC phone. The chip integrates a four-arm Cortex-A77 core, and the operating frequency is 2.6 GHz. The arm Cortex-A55 core runs on 2.0GHz, and the energy efficiency is extremely high. According to the company, the chip is the world's first graphics card with Arm Mali-G77 GPU, capable of "seamless streaming and gaming at 5G speed." GPUs can also support full HD displays up to 120 Hz and refresh rates up to 90 Hz, and support 2K displays.

Other features include the AI processing unit, which is twice as functional as MediaTek's previous APU. It is the world's first five-core image signal processor (ISP) and the world's first SoC to support dual 5G SIM cards. In-car Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.

In terms of 5G performance, the new chip supports two kinds of carrier aggregation below 5G, and supports the theoretical download and upload speeds of 4.7Gbps and 2.5Gbps on networks below 6Ghz, respectively. This makes the new chip the fastest 5G SoC below 6GHz in the world.

The first batch of Dimensity 1000 devices will be launched in the first quarter of 2020, although the company has not released the names of any smartphone suppliers that will use new chips in future devices. But judging from the voice of Dimensity 1000, these devices should be comparable to all the flagship phones in 2020, such as the Galaxy S11, one plus eight, and Pixel 5.

In a separate press release, MediaTek did designate a partner to produce 5G notebooks. The company announced that it will work with Intel to develop 5G consumer and business notebook solutions. At the same time, Dell and Hewlett-Packard will be the first notebook manufacturers to launch 5G notebooks, although we won't achieve that goal until early 2021.

PC uses a 5G modem based on the Helio M70 5G modem, which was introduced in the 5G SOC made for the first 5G mobile phones earlier this year.
