OLAP (online Analytical processing)

Definition 1:

OLAP is online data access and analytical processing for specific problems. Through fast, stable and consistent interactive access to a variety of possible forms of information, which is converted from the original data to reflect the true "dimensions" of the enterprise that users can understand, allows decision makers to take an in-depth look at the data.

Definition 2:

OLAP is a software technology, which enables analysts to quickly, consistently and interactively observe information from all aspects, in order to achieve the purpose of in-depth understanding of the data. This information is converted directly from the original data, and they reflect the real situation of the enterprise in a way that is easy for users to understand.

The relationship and comparison between 2.OLAP and OLTP

1) online transaction processing (On Line Transaction Processing,OLTP) is a transaction processing work in the network environment, using computer network technology, characterized by fast transaction response and frequent data modification, so that users can use the database to quickly deal with specific business. OLTP is a new stage in the development of transaction processing from stand-alone to network environment. OLTP applications require multiple queries to be parallel in order to distribute each query to a processor.

OLTP is characterized by a large amount of transactions, but the transaction content is relatively simple and the repetition rate is high. A large number of data operations mainly involve adding, deleting, changing, checking and so on.

The data processed by OLTP is highly structured, the transactions involved are relatively simple, and the data access path is known, or at least fixed.

OLTP is aimed at transaction operators and underlying managers.

The goal of the development of OLTP system is to be able to handle large amounts of data. Each time unit can handle more transactions, support more concurrent users, and have better system robustness.

2) online Analytical processing (On Line Analytical Processing,OLAP) is designed to support complex analytical operations, focusing on decision support for analysts and senior management. The basic idea of OLAP is that decision makers observe the state of the enterprise and understand the changing trend of the enterprise in a multi-dimensional form from many aspects and angles.
