On August 21, 2017, Netgate released the RC version of pfsense2.4.0, which adds some new features. Compared with the previous version, the main changes are as follows:

Compile and develop based on FreeBSD11.0-RELEASE.

A new bsdinstall-based pfSense installer that supports ZFS,UEFI and multiple types of partition layouts (such as GPT,BIOS).

Netgate ARM devices such as SG-1000 and SG-3100 are supported.

Open × × 2.4.x support, which brings AES-GCM passwords, speed improvements, negotiable encryption parameters, TLS encryption, and dual stack / multiple functions.

GUI is supported in multiple languages and 12 languages are available.

WebGUI improvement, redesigned login page, improved GET / POST CSRF processing, system panel re-adjusted, AJAX optimized.

Certificate management has been improved, including CSR signing and international character support.

Updated the 802.11 wireless stack.

Matters needing attention:

Later versions of pfsense2.4.0 no longer support 32-bit x86 hardware and NanoBSD. 32-bit x86 hardware can continue to run pfSense2.3.x, which will receive security updates for at least a year after 2.4.0-RELEASE is released.

To use ZFS, you need to reinstall the operating system. It is not possible to upgrade UFS in situ from UFS to ZFS at this time.

Firewalls that use 6RD for IPv6 WAN connections may need further testing to ensure that traffic and monitoring are working properly.

Some hardware devices may not be able to boot the 2.4.0 installation image, for example, the installation will not work due to compatibility issues with UEFI. These are primarily BIOS issues, not installation program image issues. Being able to upgrade from 2.3.x usually does not affect the installation of version 2.4.

To upgrade a firewall running on pfSense software version 2.2.x or earlier, you must first upgrade the firewall to pfSense 2.3.4 and then update pfSense 2.4.0. Alternatively, reinstall 2.4.0 directly and restore the configuration.
