Design Manager helps many developers create their own website designs in SharePoint. Usually we customize the master page according to the site design, because it defines common elements that run through all pages of the site, you can use any HTML editor to edit the master page through "Design Manager" under "site Settings" and map your network drive.

For example, the search box on the home page can help users find videos on the site, after configuring the search settings, insert a search box from gallery, then navigate to the search settings from Design Manager, and add the search center URL, update search fragments and copy HTML.

Page Layout defines the appearance of a set of pages by styling page fields and Web part zones in the common elements of the master page, and the previously mapped network drive can be used to edit the page layout using any HTML editor.

When developing Page layout, use Design Manager to develop, this kind of development way is to write html file directly, for the elements (e.g. Webpart zone) needed on the page, you can add them by snippet. The advantage of this way is that the development is faster.

For example, I want to add Web Part Zone snippet to Media Web Part.
