Apple asked Unicode Group to add emoticons to better represent the disabled. Apple has come up with 13 new emoticons, including guide dogs, hearing aids and people who use crutches and wheelchairs.

Apple wrote in its proposal to the Unicode Federation that it works with the Council for the Blind, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation and the National Association of the Deaf to develop barrier-free emoticons.

Apple said the list does not mean a comprehensive description of all "possible disability descriptions", but is a starting point.

Wei Wu pointed out that at present, there is only one disability-related emoji available to users-"wheelchair symbols". Apple said in the proposal that although 1/7 of the people are disabled.

If Unicode approves Apple's proposal at a meeting in April, emoji could be launched along with emoji 12.0 in the second half of 2019.
