The latest AMD drivers have released Linux kernel patches, which will enable users to get better performance and power consumption ratios from AMDZen-based CPU. According to Phoronix, these drivers currently support processors supported by the Zen3 microarchitecture, such as Ryzen5000 desktop processors and Epyc server processors.

Huang Rui, a senior technician at AMD, wrote: "We want to introduce a new AMDCPU frequency control mechanism as a 'amd-pstate' driver for the CPU series based on modern AMDZen in the Linux kernel."

It is reported that the new AMD-PSTATE driver is expected to bring the same level of optimization to Zen3 processors as Intel P-State drivers have provided for Intel CPU for a long time.

Unlike common ACPICPUFreq drivers, the new AMD-PSTATE uses ACPI co-processor performance control (CPPC) to help make better performance state decisions, maximizing performance with minimal energy consumption.

According to Phoronix, AMD first introduced its CPPC-based optimized driver in July 2019, when the company was about to launch its Zen2 micro architecture.

But this effort never got to the core and was eventually abandoned, said to be due to AMD's "lack of resources".

Although ACPICPPC support is derived from Zen2 processors, AMD-PSTATE drivers are currently limited to Zen3 processors. However, Phoronix reports that AMD has promised to expand its coverage to include not only upcoming processors, but also older Zen2-based processors.
