Migration is the process of moving a virtual machine from one host or storage location to another.

There are 4 migration options:

1. Cold migration: the power has been turned off, configuration files and disk files can be relocated to the new storage location. You can migrate from one data center to another.

2. Migrate suspended virtual machines: the suspended virtual machines are moved to a new host. Configuration files and disk files can be relocated to a new storage location and can be migrated from one data center to another.

3. Migrate through vmotion: the power has been turned on and the virtual machine can be moved to a new host without interrupting the availability of the virtual machine. Virtual machines cannot be moved from one data center to another, in the same data center.

4. Migrate through storagevmotion: turn on the power. The storage of the virtual machine can be moved without interrupting the availability of the virtual machine.

Vmotion migration and migration of suspended virtual machines-hot migration-enables virtual machines to be migrated without powering off them. Vmotion migration is sometimes referred to as "live migration"

Migration process

Cold migration:

Migration tasks:

"if you move to a different data store, the configuration files (nvram files (bios settings)) and log files are moved from the source host to the associated storage area of the target host."

Register the virtual machine with the new host

The option to move to a different data store is selected, and the old version of the virtual machine is removed from the source host after the migration is complete.

Steps:

Move configuration files (nvram files (bios settings) and log files, pending files, and disks of virtual machines from the source host to the associated storage area of the destination host.

Register a virtual machine

The old version is removed from the source host

There are three types of migration:

Change hosts: migrate between hosts, storage unchanged (in shared storage)

Changing data stores: migration between stores

Change the host and data storage: all migrations such as cold migration

Requirements for Vmtion migration

A) enable vmotion on the host

B) the shared storage requirements of vmotion must be met

C) meet the network requirements of vmtion

Vmotion shared memory requirements

1. It must be on the same memory, which can be accessed by both the source host and the target host.

2. Shared storage is usually located on storage area network (SAN), iscsi and NAS shared storage. FC SAN 、 ISCSI SAN 、 NFS NAS

Vmotion requires Gigabit Ethernet between vmtion-enabled hosts. Each vmotion host must have at least two Ethernet adapters.

Storage requirements:

For example, soft iscsi is built in linux 6 as shared storage for virtual machines.

The iscsi server is responsible for defining storage objects and allocating logical space.

Install scsi-target-utils, libibverbs, libmlx4,; librdmacm, perl-Config-General packages on linux6, and add a new hard drive.

Hard drives, partitions, logical volumes, soft RAID, etc. can all be used as storage devices for ISCSI services.
