Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--

Continuing from the above, let's introduce another new service of Azure Global, Dedicated host, that is, dedicated hosts.

In fact, the concept of dedicated host is not a new term. Many clouds actually had the concept of dedicated host a long time ago. At present, Azure Global's dedicated host already provides a preview.

In fact, a dedicated host is nothing more than a group of dedicated physical machines. Generally speaking, we all know that the VM on the public cloud shares resources, and the VM you and others use is deployed on the same VM Host. In this way, the resources you can use are actually shared. In many cases, there will be some restrictions in this scenario. For example, when the performance of VM is very high, shared resources may not be accepted. There are also cases where license and hardware are bound, and this scenario may not apply to cloud multi-tenancy sharing VM Host.

In general, dedicated hosts have the following advantages

Physical server-level hardware isolation. No other Vm is placed on the host. Dedicated hosts are deployed in the same data center and share the same network and underlying storage infrastructure with other non-independent hosts.

Controls maintenance events initiated by the Azure platform. Although most maintenance events have little impact on the virtual machine, in some cases, each second of the pause has an impact. When using dedicated hosts, you can choose a maintenance period to reduce the impact on the service.

With the Azure mixed rights, you can bring your Windows and SQL licenses to Azure. The use of mixed benefits can provide additional benefits. For more information, see Azure mixed entitlements.

Azure dedicated host will have the concept of host group and host.

Host groups are resources that represent a collection of dedicated hosts. Create and add hosts to the host group in the zone and availability zone.

Hosts are resources that map to physical servers in the Azure data center. When you create a host, a physical server is assigned. The host is created in the host group. The host provides a SKU that describes the size of the VM that can be created. Each host can deploy multiple Vm of different sizes, provided they come from the same size series.

When you create a VM in Azure, you can select a dedicated host to use for the VM. You have complete control over which Vm is placed on the host.

Points to pay attention to:

When configuring high availability, in order to satisfy SLA, VM needs to be deployed to different hosts. At present, only three kinds of size, DSv3 and ESv3,FSV2, can support dedicated hosts, and VMSS does not support dedicated hosts.

The VM size deployed in a dedicated host is fixed, for example, VM of different sizes can be mixed on a single host. For example, you can deploy D2s v3 and D16s v3 VM on the same host, but if you want to deploy virtual machines of DV3 and EV3 series on one host, this is not possible!

So far, the dedicated host is still in the state of preview, which is not recommended in the production environment. For more information on GA, please see Microsoft's official website.

Billing method

The billing method of the dedicated host is different from that of the ordinary VM. It should be noted that the billing of the VM is based on the running time of each VM, but the billing of the dedicated host will not be based on the number of VM running in the host and the running time of the VM. Instead, it will be billed according to the running time of the dedicated host, which has nothing to do with the number of VM running in this host. Don't think that if you build a dedicated host, you don't have to pay for it if you don't build VM.

In addition, the cost of license will be calculated separately. If you can enjoy hybrid benefit, you can enjoy some discount. This billing method is a bit like the form of on premise.

One question is how to calculate the cost of migrating to a dedicated host if you have previously purchased license, which is explained on Microsoft's official website.

Because the hardware is provided exclusively for you, the outsourced software management terms that apply to Windows Server and SQL Server licenses obtained before October 1, 2019 allow you to assign existing licenses to Azure dedicated hosts, just as you assign licenses to servers in your data center. Eligible customers can also use Azure hybrid benefits to save Azure dedicated host deployment costs.

Finally, one more point.

At present, only paid subscriptions can create dedicated hosts, such as trial accounts, MSDN subscriptions and sponsorship accounts, so the process of creation will not be demonstrated here. Those who are interested can try it themselves.
