Shulou(Shulou.com)05/31 Report--

Over the years, Apple, Samsung and Huawei have all developed custom chipsets. This has reduced their dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek, and now three other smartphone brands can follow suit.

According to the latest report from CNBeta, Oppo executives recently distributed an internal memo revealing plans for the so-called Mariana project. The latter clearly pays homage to the deepest trenches in the world and details the company's future work on internal chipsets.

The project is reportedly led by a technical committee headed by a former technical director of Qualcomm. Ironically, the committee is currently one of Oppo's largest chipset suppliers.

To help speed up the process, one plus and Realme engineers are reported to have joined the team. This shows that Oppo is working hard to develop a new chipset design that can be used by all subsidiaries.

Oppo recently revealed in an interview with C114 News that the ultimate goal of making chips is to provide good service to customers. However, it stressed that the move was a long-term investment rather than an attempt to compete with Qualcomm and MediaTek, which remain many of Oppo's partners.

Oppo has previously announced plans to spend about $7 billion on research and development over the next three years, much of which could be used to develop future internal chipsets for Oppo, yijia and Realme smartphones.
