We often ask that one of the capabilities of leader is called drive organizational alignment, so how to understand this alignment?

Rising to the industry level, there are many participants in each industry who work closely together to form a cooperative ecosystem. For example, the communications industry has hundreds of thousands of enterprises involved, such as mobile phone chip manufacturers (Qualcomm), screen manufacturers (Sharp), camera manufacturers (Leica), mobile phone brands (Huawei), mobile operators (China Mobile), network equipment vendors (Ericsson) and so on.

So how to make sure that everyone can cooperate well? This requires a method to implement industrial alignment.

For telecom industry, the approach to industrial alignment is through standard, so we will see that standards organizations such as 3GPP play an important role in the industry. And standard plus patent constitute the ultimate attack, so this is why we are under pressure to push the domestic standard TD-S, until TD-LTE is the next city.

For Internet industry, the alignment approach has become open source, so various Foundation (foundations) have become the standard-bearers of industry leaders.

From industry back to the organization level. Organization (organization), from its root organ, although it is composed of individuals, it is by no means scattered, but an organic (organic) whole. If an organization wants to become an organic whole, it must realize organizational alignment, otherwise it is.

So what are the ways to implement organizational alignment? Let's try to enumerate.

The highest level is align by strategy.

After the ideas have reached a consensus, they each find their own position and priority in the whole big picture, and then focus on priorities.

The second is align by system.

System is the standardization and systematization of procedures.

Next, align by goals. (manage by objectives)

Decompose the goal, KPI, and investigate the achievement of the goal and KPI.

Next, align by supervision. (micro-manage)

Supervise every specific decision and action of everyone, coordinate and intervene in time.

There is no lower level than supervision.

However, vision, which is at a higher level than strategy, cannot implement alignment. A good vision should be able to accommodate the fission and evolution of strategy, which requires that flexibility and alignment happen to be contradictory, so vision cannot be used for align organization.

Therefore, if you want to drive organizational alignment, you should choose to do it on one of the above four levels according to the situation. If you look at the leadership level of a leader, you can see which level of alignment method he can successfully apply and successfully implement the alignment of the organization.
