Application of SAP Serial Number in SD

SAP has a function of serial number management. If this function is enabled, we can trace and manage materials in detail. Material master data provides us with detailed information that distinguishes one material from another, while serial number management allows us to achieve refined management of individual materials under the same material code.

Before we begin the detailed configuration and application of the system, let's discuss the following two questions.

A1: Serial numbers are refined to a single material, while batches can have many units (one batch for the same production date, one batch for the same order…). Therefore, serial number management cannot be performed on items with discontinuous units such as "units" and "pieces" because there are requirements on the unit. For example, when serial number management is enabled for items with such units, the system will give an Error Message "Serial numbers can be managed only if base unit of measurement is discrete."

1. Maintain Serial Number Parameters "T.Code:OIS1"

The so-called Parameters here is actually the Equipment Category under PM. This Catalog is used to classify Serial Number Master (I guess SAP's serial number management function may be extended from equipment management to other items)

2. Maintain Serial Number Profile "T.Code:OIS2"

Here you can maintain different profiles for different Business Processes. Through Profiles, you can achieve the following controls:

2-1. Serializing procedure field: controls which business process this Profile is for. There can be multiple business processes.

2-2. ExistReq field: controls whether the serial number is given externally or internally when the serial number is created in the corresponding business process (if the serial number is given internally, you need to create a Serial Number Master first, and then select from the created Master Number)

2-3. Cat field: controls which Category the Profile is set under (here Category is defined in the previous step)

2-4. StkCk field: controls whether to check Stock information when assigning serial numbers. If Stock information in Serial Number Master is inconsistent with Stock information in IM, you can select whether the system gives Warning or Error.

3. Create Serial Number Master T.Code:IQ01

You can create only one serial number at a time, or you can create multiple serial numbers at a time (create multiple serial numbers at once: IQ01-> Menu MaterialNo->List editing->Create or T.Code: IQ04)

4. Create Sales Documents and maintain Serial Number "T.Code:VA01" as required

(Assuming that the business process defined in 2-1 is SO, you must enter Serial Number when creating it.) Enter the corresponding SO Item information and select Extras->Technical objects to enter the serial number. Whether to enter freely or select from existing serial numbers depends on the setting of 2-2.
