Anyone with a child (or a pesky roommate) will know that yelling from one room to another at home is not very effective, especially when the door is closed. However, if you have some echo devices, you can solve this problem. Alexa allows you to use these devices as walkie-talkies, using a simple built-in feature called Drop In.

The first step is to know the name of each device in the home.

Open the Alexa app on your smartphone and click "device" in the lower right corner. On the device screen, you can choose to view only Amazon devices on the network (marked with the button "EchoAlexa") or all existing Alexa-enabled devices at the top of the screen. The difference is that Amazon devices allow you to use drag-and-drop to communicate with other rooms; other Alexa devices, such as the Sonos, do not.

Click "EchoAlexa" and you will see a list of Amazon devices; those that are offline will be marked as offline. Each device has its own assigned name, which you can use to direct commands. (by the way, if you don't like any specified names, you can change them directly on this page. Just click on the device name. This takes you to the device Settings page, where you can select the Edit name link under the current name of the device.)

Once you know the name of the device to be invoked, simply use the insert command. For example, when you talk to another Echo Dot room called "master bedroom", you can enter the master bedroom by saying "Alexa". "the device in the room will make a sound and its indicator (if any) will turn green. Then you will be able to hear what is happening in the other room through your own device, and they will be able to hear what is happening in your room.

To stop the connection, please say, "Alexei, hang up."

Make an announcement.

If you are not interested in two-way conversations, you can use the announcement feature. This will send messages to all Alexa-enabled devices, whether they are from Amazon or not.

Say, "Alexei, announce."

Alexa will ask you what you want to say. Announce your message ("dinner will be ready in 10 minutes" or "zombies will be here soon"), and all Alexa devices on the network will send a prompt to play your message.
