VMware VSAN, full name is VMware Virtual SAN, abbreviated as VSAN (note that V is uppercase). Now, in many scenarios, VSAN can support better, because VSAN is an advanced function embedded in the vSphere kernel, it is extremely easy to use and manage, can perfectly cooperate with VMware SPBM to achieve storage policy-driven automation, allocate storage resources at the granularity of virtual machines and even VMDK, and seamlessly and tightly integrate with various other functions of vSphere.
When it comes to VSAN, we can't do without VMware's software-defined storage (SDS), let alone VMware's software-defined data center (SDDC). VMware's software-defined data center was first proposed by VMworld in 2012 and was quickly recognized by the IT industry. VMware believes that software-defined data centers are the next phase in the evolution of IT and are by far the most effective, resilient, and cost-effective approach to cloud computing infrastructure.
The SDDC methodology abstracts, pools, and automates storage, network connectivity, security, and availability, and the entire data center is automatically controlled by software. The services provided by the infrastructure will be aggregated and used in conjunction with intelligent policy-based provisioning, automation, and monitoring capabilities. API and other connectors support seamless extension to private, hybrid, and public cloud platforms.
To sum up, the core of the SDDC concept includes: 1) the software-defined data center is automatically controlled by the software; 2) the software definition includes three phases: abstraction, pooling and automation; and 3) the software-defined data center consists of five major components: computing, storage, networking, management and security.
As one of the five components of VMware software-defined data center (computing, storage, network, management and security), the concept of software-defined storage (SDS) is also proposed for the first time. In the eyes of VMware, software-defined storage is to provide the storage of industry-standard servers and realize the automation and pooling of storage through the software control plane. It simplifies the method of storage setup and management to the extreme, and greatly reduces the cost by using the storage of industry-standard servers. VMware SDS consists of two parts: Data Plane (data plane) and Control Plane (control plane).
VSAN is part of VMware SDS Data Plane, and the other two are Virtual Volumes and Cloud Object Storage, as shown in the following figure.
Virtual Volumes is an integration and management framework for external disk arrays. If the external disk array supports Virtual Volumes, it can also be driven by VMware SPBM, and Cloud Object Storage can be seen as VMware's ambition in the future. Perhaps, in the future, VMware will even include object storage on cloud platforms into the scope of SPBM.
In fact, the development of VSAN has been going on since at least 2010. The reason VMware developed VSAN is to help users better adapt to the growing popularity of virtualization and cloud computing in order to integrate seamlessly with vSphere and provide SPBM capabilities. Its emergence, as well as NSX, which evolved through the acquisition of Nicira, form the cornerstone of VMware SDDC (Software defined data Center). VMware was originally scheduled to be released with vSphere 5.5, but in order to create a stable and reliable enterprise-class commercial product, further rigorous and comprehensive testing and improvement of VSAN, it was not until March 2014 that VMware officially released the first version of VSAN 1.0.
VSAN aggregates SSD (solid state disk) and HDD (hard disk) in each node of vSphere cluster server to form a shared storage pool.
Then, the storage pool allocates storage space to the virtual machines in the cluster according to the pre-created storage policy (if the user does not create it, the system default policy is automatically used). With the help of the NAS plug-in, shared file space can also be provided for use by other clusters or physical machines.
VSAN is a software-based distributed storage solution that can be run on any standard X86 server, as long as IVSAN HCL O Controller (controller), SSD and HDD are within the VSAN HCL (compatibility list). VSAN's HCL is very rich, so VSAN provides a high degree of flexibility for users to select models.
