Windows Update Delivery Optimization helps you get Windows updates and Microsoft Store apps faster and more reliably.

Windows Update Delivery Optimization works so you can get Windows updates and Microsoft Store apps from sources other than Microsoft, such as other PCs on your local network or PCs on the Internet that are downloading the same files. Delivery Optimization also sends updates and applications from your PC to other PCs on your local network or to PCs on the Internet, depending on your settings. Sharing this data between PCs can help reduce the Internet bandwidth required to keep multiple devices up to date, or make downloads more successful if your Internet connection is limited or unreliable.

When Windows uses Delivery Optimization to download an update or application, it looks for other PCs on the local network (or from the Internet, depending on your settings) that have downloaded the update or application. Windows does not download entire files from one location. Instead, downloads are divided into smaller parts. Windows then gets partial updates or applications from the PC that owns it and from Microsoft's parts. Windows uses the fastest and most reliable download sources for each section.

Delivery Optimization creates a local cache and stores files downloaded in that cache for a short time.

How to ensure data security

Delivery Optimization cannot be used to download or send personal content. Delivery Optimization does not access your personal files or folders, nor does it change any files on your PC.

Delivery Optimization uses the same security measures to download the same updates and apps you get through Windows Update and Microsoft Store. To ensure that you get reliable updates, Delivery Optimization securely obtains information from Microsoft to check the authenticity of each part of an update or application downloaded from another PC. Before installation, the download is checked again for authenticity.

How to control Windows Update Delivery Optimization:

1. First, click the Start button, then go to Settings.

2. When the Settings app opens, tap Update and Security.

3. In the left panel, click Transfer Optimization. In the right panel, scroll down and go to Advanced Options settings:

4. With Advanced Settings turned on, you can check the bandwidth allocated for uploads for background and foreground functions. If you want to allocate a percentage of bandwidth for foreground or background operations, check this box and either of the two options, Limit bandwidth used to upload updates to other PCs on the Internet and Limit how much bandwidth is used to upload updates to other PCs on the Internet.

If you use metered or capped Internet connections, Delivery Optimization will not automatically download or send some updates or applications to other PCs on the Internet.

To identify a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection as metered or capped:

Select the Start button and select Settings> Network & Internet> Wi-Fi.

Select the network you are using and enable Set as Metered Connection.

This chapter ends.
