Navicat Premium is a management tool that can connect to multiple databases. It allows you to connect to MySQL, Oracle and PostgreSQL databases simultaneously with a single program, making it more convenient to manage different types of databases.

When code snippets were introduced in the Non-Essential version of Navicat Premium, it became easier than ever to write queries against the preferred database type. The code snippet feature allows you to insert reusable code into SQL statements while working in the SQL editor. In addition to gaining access to the collection of built-in code snippets, you can also define your own code snippets. This article will provide an overview of this new feature.

Code snippet pane

The code snippet pane, located on the right side of the SQL editor, provides an easy way to insert reusable code into SQL statements while working in the SQL editor. If the editor window is docked to the main Navicat window, you can click the () icon in the information pane (# 1 in the following figure) to view the snippet library.

The code snippet library includes built-in and user-defined code snippets. If you want to reduce the number of entries in the list, you can enter a search string in the search box to filter the list (# 2 in the figure above). You can also display available code snippets based on the database type or all database types. Right-click anywhere in the library and choose Show Snippets For Other Database Type from the pop-up menu to show or hide code snippets of other database types. The check mark next to the project indicates that "Show Snippets For Other Database Type" is active.

Insert a code snippet into a query

There are two ways to insert code snippets into the editor:

Just enter the name of the code snippet in the editor. Smart code completion will provide a list of suggestions for you to choose from. Select a snippet name from the list to insert it into the editor.

You can also drag and drop code snippets from the library into the editor. After you insert a code snippet with placeholders in the editor, you can navigate between them by clicking a placeholder, and then use the tab key to iterate over each placeholder. When you select a placeholder, typing will overwrite it with the characters you type.

Add code snippet

You can create your own code snippets and add them to the library. To add a code snippet, select the desired code in the editor, then right-click and select Create Snippet from the pop-up menu.

Alternatively, you can click Create Snippet in the Code Snippet pane (# 3 in the Code Snippet pane above) to open the New Snippet dialog box directly. You can then specify the title and label type for the code snippet. Type the code in the New Snippet window, and then click the Save button to save the code snippet to the library.

Edit code snippet

Double-clicking a code snippet in the library opens the Edit dialog box. As the title of the dialog box shows, the built-in code snippet is read-only.

In addition, you can hide built-in fragments in the Snippets pane by right-clicking anywhere in the library and disabling the Show Preset Snippets item in the pop-up menu.
