Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--
This article will explain in detail how to set up VSS and VSP in NetBackup software. The editor thinks it is very practical, so I share it with you for reference. I hope you can get something after reading this article.
On the windows platform, Netbackup software handles backups of open files in two ways. One is VSP (Volume Snapshot Provider) provided by NBU, and the other is VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) that comes with windows2003 and windows2008.
VSP is an alternative to OTM (Open Transaction Manager) in older versions of NBU, around the time NBU4.5FP6 began to replace OTM. Currently the platform supported by VSP is WinXP,windows2000,windows2003 (32-and 64-bit).
The configuration in NBU is roughly the same as the AOFO (Advanced Open File Option) provided by BE, so I will only talk about the configuration method of NBU, and the configuration of BE can be found in NBU.
You will certainly ask which method to back up the open files on windows when there are both VSS and VSP on windows. NBU defaults to using VSP. However, from practical experience, it is still on the platform that supports VSS, using VSS technology to deal with open files; if not, it is safer to use VSP method.
(1) Settings related to VSS:
There are two places where you can configure VSS in NBU, one is in "Host Properties"-> master server- > "Client attribues"-> "windows open file backup", where you can choose whether or not to use VSS.

Another place is configured in snapshot client option in flashbackup-windows, which is no longer described here. You can refer to the "discussion on NetBackup flashbackup for windows".
In windows systems, the first thing to pay attention to is the VSS service; this service is started manually by default, do not change it to "disable", otherwise it will report an error when using VSS backup. If it is a windows2003 system, it is best to install the patch of SP1, otherwise it will cause bug of VSS. Practice has proved that it is better to have a version above win2003R2SP1.
Secondly, the management of VSS's "storage area" is set in the operating system, and if the implementation is not set, NBU will build it on the disk where NBU is installed. Be careful if NBU is installed on C:, and make sure there is enough space on c as much as possible. Otherwise, the backup will go wrong.
VSS can be managed through commands provided by OS:
For example: vssadmin list shadows
Vssadmin list shadowstorage
(2) settings related to VSP:
There are also two places where you can configure VSS in NBU, one is the same as above, and in "Host Properties"-> master server- > "Client attribues"-> "windows open file backup". This place is mainly used for disable/enable VSP.

Note that there are two options: (these two options apply to both VSS and VSP modes)
Snapshot usage mode of work: the default is "individual drive snapshot", it is best not to change it. If you have 2 disks C and D on your machine, make a snapshot backup of C in this mode, and then make a snapshot and backup of D. If the data on C and D are not consistent, it is best to use this method. If set to "Global drive snapshot" mode, NBU will take a snapshot of both C and D, and then back up. The success rate of backup in this mode is not very high, because it is difficult for C and D disks to meet the silence time required by VSP at the same time.
The working mode of Snapshot error control: the default is "Abort backup on error", that is, if something goes wrong, the backup job will be interrupted.
"Disable Snapshot and continue" is to abandon the use of snapshot to continue backup, which will cause the files being accessed to be dropped by skip and cannot be recovered. The backup job will eventually return to "error code 1", and the backup job will be partially successful.
Another place is in "Host Properties"-> Client- > "Client attribues"-> "VSP". This is a place where you can set some parameters for VSP.

Note the following options in this property page:
Cache file volume list: here you can list the volumes that can hold cache file. If this item is empty, NBU will automatically find a disk in all disks to put cache file;. If there is a list of disks in the item, NBU will only find the appropriate location to put cache file in these disks. There is only one way for NBU to measure whether a disk can hold cache file, and that is to choose who has more free space. This item only limits the scope of NBU options.
VSP volume exclude list: none of the disks in this list will be created with VSP snapshot volumes.
Customer cache size: this option is not selected by default and is not recommended for users. This way VSP automatically calculates the size of the Cache file. If this parameter is set, the backup will fail if the cache size is set to be smaller than the cache required for backup. If you want to set this option, it is recommended that cache size back up at least 30% of the space used by the volume.
Maximum cache size: this value is the maximum set cache file, which is recommended to be set to 95% of the available space for cache file volumes.
Busy file settings: contains 2 parameters
Busy file wait: the default is 5 seconds. This value sets how long VSP waits for the file to remain silent before it starts taking snapshots. Theoretically, it is not recommended to reduce this value, but for busier systems, you still need to reduce it; the empirical value is 3 seconds.
Busy file timeout: the default is 300 seconds. This value sets the timeout for VSP to wait for file silence. If VSP cannot wait for the opportunity to create a snapshot at this time, NBU will continue the backup without using VSP.
In addition, the VSP cache file directory name is: NBU_VSP_Cache. If antivirus software is installed on the host, it is best to put this directory in a list that is not scanned.

In addition, constant scanning by antivirus software can also cause VSP to fail.
On the windows platform, Netbackup software handles backups of open files in two ways. One is VSP (Volume Snapshot Provider) provided by NBU, and the other is VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) that comes with windows2003 and windows2008.

Add:
In vss shadow copy, it is understood that files are allowed to be written: before the backup begins, NetBackup uses VSP to create a snapshot of the backup job. NetBackup waits for a quiet period: at this point, no writes are performed on the drive containing the data to be backed up. This wait is necessary to ensure that the file system is in some consistent state. The busy File timeout (Busy file timeout) property defines the length of the quiet period. If there is not a long enough quiet period within the busy File timeout (Busy file timeout) period, the backup will continue without using VSP. The busy file timeout (Busy file timeout) defaults to 300 seconds.
