Teacher Zhang of Tengke teaches you how to deploy and use FTP/TFTP on cisco router.

Overview

In many cases, we need to transfer files from other places to Cisco devices, or from Cisco devices to other places. There are many protocols we can use when transferring files. Here we need to introduce two transfer protocols, the first is the very familiar FTP, and the second is the simple File transfer Protocol (TFTP). Maybe FTP is used a lot in daily life, but when it comes to Cisco devices, this is not the case. Cisco devices can transfer files locally from other FTP servers using FTP protocol, or they can configure themselves as a FTP server to provide file transfer for others.

In order for a Cisco device to become a FTP server, sharing files in its own storage for others to copy requires specific IOS support, while Cisco copies files locally from a remote FTP server, almost all IOS supports it. Another TFTP protocol, which is supported by almost all IOS, TFTP and FTP have the same function, but TFTP does not require authentication, while FTP can use authentication before transferring files. Cisco devices can configure themselves as a TFTP server, share their own files and directories, or copy files locally from a remote TFTP server.

Topology:

Configuration

1. Configure FTP Server

Note: to configure a Cisco device to become a FTP server, specific IOS support is required

(1) enable the FTP server feature:

Router (config) # ftp-server enable

(2) specify the shared directory of FTP

For example, share a file in flash

Router (config) # ftp-server topdir flash:abc.bin

2. Configure FTP Client

Description: the purpose of this configuration is to enable Cisco devices to copy files locally from remote FTP servers, that is, to configure usernames and passwords. Such as the user name and password in window ftp server in the figure above.

(1) configure remote FTP server user name

Router (config) # ip ftp username ccna configure the user name of the remote FTP server to be ccna

(2) configure remote FTP server password

Router (config) # ip ftp password cisco configure the user name of the remote FTP server to be cisco

(3) configure local FTP source IP (optional)

Router (config) # ip ftp source-interface

3. Configure TFTP

Description: configure the Cisco device as a TFTP server to share your own directories and files

(1) configure Cisco device as TFTP server (file name is required)

R1 (config) # tftp-server flash:abc.bin

Summary: although it is not commonly used to treat a router as a ftp, in a few cases, it is a good way to save configuration and lightweight files. Use it to avoid adding new equipment. When determining whether this command can be used, you might as well knock on the device to see if it supports it.
