The history of Juniper development
When Juniper network appeared in the network industry in 1996, the main provider of core Internet routers at that time was Cisco. In 2000, Juniper successfully entered this market, but in 2001, Juniper lost more than half. Over the next few years, it has been trying to improve the speed of Internet core routers, but the market is still saturated, so it has divided its forces to enter the enterprise network market. Now, it is promoting the concept of "new network". In this article, let's review the major events in the development of Juniper.
1996-Pradeep Sindhu founded Juniper Network with an investment of $200000 from Kleiner, Perkins and CaufieldByers, which also put Scott Kriens on the board of directors and became CEO. It then received $40 million from operators such as AT&T and UUNET, which were interested in high-speed Internet routers at the time, as well as equipment manufacturers such as 3Com, Nortel and Siemens. Obviously, these people want to be able to copy another Cisco.
In 1998, Juniper released its operating system JUNOS, which is highly reliable because of its modular architecture. Juniper then unveiled its first product, the M40 router with OC-48 interface (see chart), which boosted Juniper's 1999 revenue to $102.6 million, grabbing 15 per cent of the market. In 1999, Juniper went public, and its shares soared to $98.88 on its first day of trading from an opening price of $34. In 2000, Juniper launched the enhanced core router Mmur160 with OC-196 interface, and then released a series of small models used as service provider edge routers.
When the telecoms bubble burst in 2000, Juniper's share price plummeted-from a peak of $218.94 in September 2000 to $5.82 in October 2002. At this point, Juniper started looking for a new market-- cable operators-- and launched the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) device, but stopped production two years later. In the same year, Juniper acquired Unisphere, an operator's DSL device.
In 2004, Juniper, still looking for new sources of revenue, broke the "oath" that CEO would not compete with operators for enterprise-level business and bought the enterprise security giant NetScreen, whose products include IPSec and SSL * *, * * detection, firewall and so on. Juniper CEO Scott Kriens says NetScreen's market is a $10 billion market, and Juniper just wants to cut a piece of it. But a year later, Juniper released the J-series of enterprise routers.
(caption in the picture: less than a month before the acquisition of NetScreen, Juniper CEO Scott Kriens said: "our operator customers said to us:'we don't want our suppliers to sell directly to our customers, but to us. We can hear you very clearly, so we will not compete with our own customers.")
2005 was an acquisition year for Juniper. It bought Redline that year and used its application acceleration technology to produce another series of enterprise products-- DX load balancing / application acceleration devices. In 2008, Juniper stopped production of DX, a move analysts believe may be because Juniper does not want to break the duopoly in the market. That year, it bought Peribit and started producing WX and WXC WAN optimization equipment, which is still in production.
Also in 2005, Juniper acquired Kagoor Networks and began to enter the VoIP market. Kagoor is a manufacturer of session border controllers that connect IP voice calls between networks.
Also in 2005, Juniper acquired Funk software, which supports security policy enforcement through 802.1X switch ports.
At the end of 2005, Juniper called its NAC architecture Unified access Control (UAC), which relies on Infranet controllers to check security compliance of devices logged on to the Internet and trigger enforcement procedures for security rules. But there is an important problem: to enforce security policies on switch ports, router manufacturers need to work with Cisco, which dominates the switch market, which is almost impossible. So Juniper joined IETF and trusted computing organizations to promote the creation of the NAC standard, but industry observers believe that Juniper still needs its own switch.
Based on the NetScreen products it purchased, in 2006, Juniper launched the Security Services Gateway (SSG) enterprise router with a number of security features, apparently to compete with Cisco's ISR router.
Two years later, Juniper finally released its own family of enterprise-class switches, the EX family, which plans to integrate a dominant security management platform that allows all security devices on the network to submit data to a policy server, which enforces security policies on the switch based on the latest security information.
In 2008, Juniper hired Kevin Johnson from Microsoft as the new CEO. Johnson was in charge of Windows and Microsoft online Services at Microsoft and, before that, was responsible for developing Microsoft's sales strategy. He played a key role in Microsoft's failed acquisition of Yahoo.
The data center has become the next target for Juniper, resulting in the introduction of top-of-rack data center switches. It has also signed an OEM agreement with IBM to resell some of its switches and routers, and the two sides are jointly developing a data center fiber-optic network. The alliance seems to target Cisco's data center strategy.
On October 29th, Juniper announced a "new network" strategy, which includes partners, new software, chips, cloud computing and application development. And, of course, the new logo.
