Lithium battery is the bottleneck of many intelligent terminals, and many companies and research institutions are actively preparing more advanced battery technology.

According to foreign media reports, a start-up company called XNRGI hopes to break this situation and plans to mass produce "porous" silicon batteries next year, which have better energy density, lower manufacturing costs and safer to use than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

XNRGI, which has been developed for 15 years, has four times the energy density and half the cost of lithium-ion batteries, and their "porous" silicon batteries can be used in many scenarios, such as smartphones and many smart terminals.

In addition, XNRGI uses a method similar to that of semiconductor companies to make processors, using wafers to make batteries. After etching 2020 microns of very dense honeycomb patterns on these wafers, they coated the wafers with lithium and other metals to form the anodes and cathodes of so-called "microbatteries". Each 12-inch wafer contains 36 million such vertical microcells (with an energy density higher than 400Wh/kg), forming a macro battery that has the advantage of faster charging because of its unorthodox structure.

XNRGI batteries are recyclable and are not as prone to thermal runaway as traditional lithium-ion batteries. Their energy density exceeds 400 Wh/kg, which makes them cheaper to manufacture, making them ideal for electric vehicles and grid storage.
