Owners of Android TV and Google TV devices can no longer buy or rent movies from Apple TV apps, and customers are forced to buy movies using other Apple platforms.

Apple TV applications can be used on a variety of smart TVs, streaming set-top boxes and other devices to provide access to Apple store programs. The latest update to the application seems to have prevented users of some platforms from making purchases within the application.

According to FlatPanelsHD, the option to buy or rent movies or TV shows from Apple TV apps on Android TV and Google TV devices has been removed and replaced by a new "how to watch" button. Selecting this button tells the user that "you can buy, rent, or subscribe from Apple TV applications on iPhone, iPad, and other streaming devices."

This change will only affect new attempts to buy or rent from the platform, while the content of Apple TV+ will not be affected. Any purchase or rent paid prior to the update or through other platforms can still be viewed on the affected equipment.

Officials have not given a reason for the change, but it is likely to be due to a constant battle for commission.

Like App Store, Google charges a 30 per cent commission on in-app purchases of applications running on its platform, including Android TV and Google TV. Apple may charge such a fee for content sold through the Apple TV application, or you can enjoy a discount rate if agreed to by Google.

Currently, other third-party platforms available to Apple TV+ applications do not seem to be subject to the same restrictions. These include Samsung and LG smart TVs, as well as Roku TVs.
