It has been clear for some time that the iPhone 13 will not be equipped with a periscope zoom lens that matches the Samsung S21 Ultra (and, for sure, the Samsung Galaxy S22), but a new report suggests it may not be used in iPhone 14: through MacRumors, Apple's folding phone lens is not planned to be in production before 2023, according to South Korean website The Elec.

Folding lenses or "periscope" lenses solve one of the biggest problems with smartphones: if you want to zoom, you need a lot of space, which is not available on today's ultra-thin phones. Since no one wants to be retro, with a huge telescope lens on the back, periscope lenses provide a more elegant solution: they use mirrors to fold optics, so they don't protrude from the back of the phone, but run along the back. Results: the optical zoom was greatly improved without thicker phone case and camera bulge.

The iPhone 12 Pro I currently use can only achieve 2x zoom before the digital zoom starts (or 2.5x on the iPhone 12 Pro Max). This is a very good camera setting, but not so good in a single environment where I take the most photos: live performance. Now that the live music is back, I'm back to shooting the shows I've been to, which means I'm back to the days of using a super zoom camera: my phone takes great pictures in most environments. but its optical zoom is not very large, and the digital zoom is not very good.
