This article shows you how to analyze the Windows Server 2012 server manager. The content is concise and easy to understand. It will definitely brighten your eyes. I hope you can get something through the detailed introduction of this article.

As technicians, our focus on Windows Server is always on the system itself, including whether the server can be better managed, or whether it is more powerful and easier to operate. Great changes have taken place in server manager in Windows Server 2012, and great improvements have been made in many aspects.

The first is the startup interface of Windows Server 2012, which feels more professional and concise than Windows Server 2008 R2, as shown in the following figure.

After startup, you can see the complete interface of the new server manager, as shown in the following figure.

Figure Windows Server 2012 Server Manager interface

Compared to the traditional interface, the server manager of Windows Server 2012 makes it easier for users to focus on the tasks that the server needs to accomplish. This kind of design is not groundless, but has changed from the concept of Microsoft design system.

There are two different ideas in Windows Server 2012:

Immersive type

Windows Server2012 has all the functions of the old version of the system, but these functions do not seem to be displayed directly in front of the technician, but appear when the technician needs it, and complete the task quickly, making it easier and faster for the technician to operate.

Wiser.

Windows Server 2012 is smarter than the old system, and technicians can clearly feel that Windows Server 2012 really needs to "worry" less when using it, such as automatically launching the "dashboard" panel of the server manager panel when completing the Server "8" installation and providing a welcome interface (including Quick start, new features, and learning three modules).

In the figure above, you can already see the entire interface of the server manager of Windows Server 2012, so now compare the server manager of the previous Windows Server 2008 R2:

The server manager in Windows Server 2008 R2 has almost no concept of the top navigation bar, and as you can see from the toolbar in the upper-right corner of the image above, there was nothing at all in the old version. Even in this case, the entire interface still shows so much when the left navigation bar shrinks.

As a matter of fact, many of these contents are not commonly used or technicians are not very concerned about them, and when they are unimportant, they will cause confusion and impact. Take the log on the right, for example, although the log is important to the system, not all logs need to be displayed in the eyes of the administrator. For example, when the server is running normally, there is no need to pay attention to the operation records automatically completed by the system, but only when there are problems, errors and warnings in the system, the logs are really valuable.

The top of Windows Server 2012 is very concise, but very rich. The toolbar on the top and right has administration, tools, viewing, and help, respectively, to accomplish most of the tasks in the old version of Server Manager.

Administration: here you can add and remove roles and functions, add servers, and create server groups.

Tools: there are so many things here that I don't know if all of you look familiar, which is very similar to the "management tools" in the old version of Server. Although there is no icon, it is more concise. It is believed that technicians who are proficient in using Windows Server are more familiar with the text in "management tools" than small icons.

View: in view, we can adjust the display size of the entire panel, making it easier to switch between different devices, such as a flat panel and a high-resolution display.

Help: this mainly displays the help information of the server manager, such as help files, TechCenter, TechNet Forum, etc.

Take a look at the small flag on the left side of the four menu bars, which is a bit similar to the "Operations Center" prompt. Under normal circumstances, a small flag will be displayed here, and if there is a new notice or prompt message, it will be displayed in a very prominent form. For example, we have added a feature that can directly close the wizard during the installation phase, which will be displayed in this small flag, and then click the small flag to see the specific task.

When some features are installed and need to be configured, an exclamation point is displayed to indicate that configuration is required for completion.

If an error occurs during installation, the small flag will turn red, indicating that an error has occurred.

Such a feature means that multiple features can be installed or multiple roles can be added at the same time, and there is no need to be stuck in the installation interface all the time, and will be reminded when it is finished or when configuration is needed. Next, let's take a look at the left, which has changed a lot compared to the old version of Server. It has become very concise, with only four large blocks, namely, the dashboard, the local server, all servers, and file and storage services.

By default, our dashboard, the welcome interface of the server manager, and some important information, such as server events, logs, and so on, are displayed. Let's take a look at what is displayed on the local server:

You can see that almost all the local server information is displayed in the local server bar. Here * a large chunk of content is displayed in the "initial configuration tasks" panel of the old version of Server, but more content is displayed, such as hardware information. Drag the scroll bar on the right to see more, such as services, detailed logs, server roles, and so on.

There are also tools for performance evaluation and analysis, basically everything related to the server can be found here, but it is not crowded at all.

Then there are file and storage services, which is where Windows Server 2012 has changed a lot. File and storage services are divided into three parts, namely, servers, storage pools, and volumes. The server block mainly displays the servers currently managed, multiple servers can be managed at the same time, and you can use various filter settings to select the specified server.

There is also a storage pool under the file drink storage, which is a very interesting concept. Allow hard drives from the server to be added to the storage pool, and then include virtual and physical disks in the storage pool. Virtual disks are the files we mainly use on virtual machines, including VHD and VHDX.

A new type of virtual disk in Windows Server 2012 with the suffix VHDX. Can support more than a single virtual disk 2TB capacity, and support power outage, unexpected computer stop error detection.

Another tab is the volume, which is easy to understand, which is the software version of the RAID array, not implemented by hardware, and can create mirrors and checks. There are also shared folders, storage pools, and virtual iSCSI disks below, and you can see the structure of the file server.

The whole server manager is pretty much like this. Let's take a look at an example, which is a process of adding .server 3. 5 using the add roles and functions wizard.

First open the add role or feature wizard, which will display an introduction, which is completely different from the old version.

The next step is completely different from the older version of Server, which prompts you to choose whether to install based on role or feature or based on remote Desktop Services solution. Windows Server 2012 divides Server into two categories, traditional and virtualized for cloud computing.

This division can deploy the required servers more quickly and accurately, for example, select "install based on remote Desktop Service solution". At this time, the step on the left will automatically switch to the "virtualization" solution step, and list the roles and functions of virtualization, completely blocking out unrelated features, such as ADDS services.

Since you plan to install .NET Framework 3.5 here, you can simply select role-based or feature-based installation.

After that, you will be prompted to select the server to which you want to add roles or functions, you can choose local, local area network, server group, and you can also choose an offline server based on virtual disk, where you choose the local server.

Then you are prompted to select the role you want to add, skipping this step without adding a role.

Select .NET Framework 3.5 and a load bar appears at the top. Click the x on the right to deselect the add function. This is useful when you mistakenly choose to add a larger function, but of course the loading bar for a small function is fleeting.

Then there is the confirmation page, where you can check to automatically restart the server and click install if the functionality is required.

Installing the progress bar is easy.

After you start the installation, you can close the wizard, and then you can view the installation progress and installation task information in the "small flag" of the server manager, and click close.

OK, you can see the installation progress here. Wait patiently.

The server manager in Windows Server 2012 has indeed undergone an earth-shaking change, which is what all technicians want to see, because it becomes more practical, and after using it for a long time, you will find that it is really suitable for technicians.
