Xen working principle and Architecture XEN working principle

Xen accesses physical hardware through the hypervisor software layer to run multiple independent and isolated sub-operating systems on a single computer. Hypervisor acts like a traffic policeman, directing hardware access and coordinating requests from various sub-operating systems.

In a Xen environment, there are two main components. One is the virtual machine monitor (VMM), also known as hypervisor. The Hypervisor layer hardware and the virtual machine are first loaded into the first layer of the hardware. The virtual machine can be deployed when the Hypervisor is loaded. In Xen, a virtual machine is called Domain. Among these virtual machines, Domain0 has high privileges and is responsible for some special work. Since hypervisor does not contain any drivers that talk to hardware or administrators, these drivers are provided by domain0. With domain0, administrators can use some Xen tools to create other virtual machines (DomainU). These domainU belong to unprivileged domain.

In domain0, a xend process is also loaded. This process manages all other virtual machines and provides access to the console of these virtual machines. When creating a virtual machine, the administrator uses the configuration program to talk directly to domain0.

The Xen architecture allows hypervirtualized operating systems to access the hardware directly, with almost no impact on performance.
