Docker technology has been around for more than 6 years, and the rapid development of Kubernetes feels like outdated news, but this does not mean that the container technology ecosystem has come to an end. On the contrary, there are many ways for the technological culture of containers and their surroundings to continue to evolve. Let's take a look at the future predictions of the four containers that I firmly believe will come.

With the development of the container market, there are four prospects worth considering.

More and better Windows containers

Native Docker containers for Windows have been problematic since 2016. Since then, industry enthusiasm for Windows containers may have waned, and I think part of the reason is that Windows containers are not as exciting to use as Linux containers.

But I don't think Windows containers have stopped developing. Looking to the future, especially when introducing new server versions of Windows, I expect Microsoft to continue to support native containers in its own operating system and strengthen its support for Kubernetes management using Windows clusters.

More runtime

Docker is the runtime that makes the container famous. But since the debut of Docker, there have been many other container runtimes.

This list is expected to continue to grow as more and more organizations launch their own runtimes to meet specific needs. Nevertheless, I think most workloads will continue to rely on the runtime that is now dominant, such as Docker and Containerd.

Kubernetes has lost its momentum.

There is no doubt about the popularity of Kubernetes, but with more and more Kubernetes applications, I doubt that the platform will be as cool as it is now

After all, developers thought Heroku was the greatest application ever, and cloud-based virtual machines could solve all the problems on the planet. Although these technologies are still widely used today, they seem to have become commonplace. For more information, please pay attention to "this is how Linux should learn". Of course, this is not to say that Kubernetes will be replaced by another orchestration mechanism. I certainly don't think Kubernetes will disappear. I just don't think everyone will still be excited about Kubernetes in five years' time.

The container becomes a commodity safely.

For a variety of reasons, containers need a new security solution. So far, container security and its unique challenges have been the focus of discussion among IT security personnel, not to mention some companies.

There is a good reason for this, you know, container security is a very special thing.

However, if the container needs to be extended, its security requirements must be addressed through a broader security process. In other words, we must use the same system and policy to protect the containers we use for everything.

To do so, container security must be commercialized. In the future, I doubt that we will no longer pay attention to the particularity of container safety, or will no longer seek a platform mainly used to protect container safety. Instead, we integrate containers into other security workflows.
