This article mainly introduces Windows Server 2012 how to restore the system image, the article is very detailed, has a certain reference value, interested friends must read it!

Windows Server Backup applications built into Windows Server 2008 and later Windows Server are a small gold mine for management. Windows Server 2012 continues the legacy of Windows Server Backup applications, which is a great feature. This feature is especially useful for restoring your computer to an available state after the application fails or after the update installation appears bug.

The reason why the built-in Windows Server Backup application is very valuable is that it does a complex and reliable server backup, which is definitely a critical task, and is often seen as adding cost, complexity, or third-party application solutions.

From virtual machine (VM) snapshots (on virtualization or storage platforms) to off-side storage media backups, there are multiple layers of cost and complexity that may be necessary for some data. However, I can't think of a simpler backup way to increase the job security of current network administrators.

It is advisable to provide some or all of the host and virtual machine resources, as well as dedicated local storage for Windows Server Backup images, if possible, with alternative disk controllers or backup target computers. Use removable storage devices, such as USB 2.0 and 3.0 hard drives supported on physical computers. Provide virtual machines and virtual hard disks (VHD files) for backup.

Restore options in Windows Server Backup

If your Windows Server 2012 computer has been performing daily backups and you decide that you need to roll back the entire server to a certain date, ideally, you need application consistency, the right point in time, and a complete disk image to restore. If you select the restore operation from the actions pane in the Windows Server Backup application, and then select the date and time of the desired backup to restore, you have the option to see which items in the backup are recoverable. Figure 1 shows the available recoveries on a Windows Server 2012 computer running Exchange Server 2013.

Figure 1: view the recoverable items in the Windows Server 2012 restore operation to verify what was backed up.

If you just want to restore files and folders or applications such as Exchange, you can continue to restore from within the Windows Server Backup application. However, if your intention is to actually restore the entire computer, you will receive the notification shown in figure 2. Basically, you will be prompted to start your computer from the Windows installation disk.

System recovery from Windows installation disk

If the computer is a virtual machine and provides two virtual hard disks for service and backup, the system recovery operation is very simple. To start the recovery, connect Windows Server 2012 to install the DVD or ISO file to the virtual machine, start VM, and then press any key to boot from CD or DVD. If the backup is on a different media than a VHD, or if it involves a physical computer, make sure that the storage media is available on the computer before starting to install DVD.

The Windows installer screen will prompt you to enter your language, country and keyboard type. After clicking "next", instead of clicking the "install" button, select the option to repair your computer, in the lower left corner of the screen, as shown in figure 3.

After selecting system image recovery from the Advanced options page, search for available backup images after the storage connected to the VM or physical computer. Assuming that your backup media is connected and found, confirm the target operating system you see, as shown in figure 6.

The remirror computer wizard starts. Follow these steps to restore the system image to a specific date in the past. Everything on the computer will be replaced by the information in the system image.

1. Check the option to select the system image, and click next.

2. Select the system image to restore. If you do not see an available image, the Advanced button will allow you to add drivers to support other removable or fixed backup media.

3. On the Select date and time page for system image recovery, scroll to find the desired image, and then click next. As shown in figure 7.

4. If there is no disk formatting or partitioning problem, you can click "next" on the select other restore options page.

5. Click "finish", and then click "Yes" to confirm your image recovery configuration. The restore process will begin and may take from a few minutes to several hours.

Considerations after restoring an image

After the server has been successfully restored, disconnect the Windows Server 2012 installation media and restart the restored computer. Some thoughts on restoring system image:

Try to use successful backups unless you know exactly what historical point you need to choose. The older the recovery system image you use, the more likely it is that your computer's account password in AD will change, and you may encounter difficult or unsolvable problems of rejoining the domain.

If you restore an older system image, the share may need to be recreated manually.

Restoring the system image of an AD domain controller (DC) requires special attention, especially in a domain with multiple DC.
