A process is a procedure in progress, or a procedure in execution. That is, a program becomes a process when loaded into memory. Namely:

Process = Program + Execution

In order to improve CPU utilization, people think of loading multiple programs into the computer at the same time and executing them concurrently. These programs that exist simultaneously in computer memory are called processes. The process makes each user feel like they own the CPU. Thus, a process is a concept that emerges for multiprogramming on a CPU.
