Google Chrome is one of the most resource-intensive apps on Windows, and it takes up more memory if you install extensions or open too many tabs. Google Chrome Canary is currently internally testing a new feature to improve its resource footprint.

Chrome already offers a feature called "Obsolete Tags," which monitors tag usage and suspends unused tags. This feature can improve system performance and control RAM usage to some extent, but Google hopes to complete the "obsolete tags" feature with a new feature called "frozen tags."

With Freeze Tags, Google wants Chrome users to configure how they freeze tags, allowing them to decide when to pause them automatically. Google explained that enabling the "freeze tag" feature would freeze the tag after five minutes in the background.

Currently, Chrome Canary allows users to use the Freeze Tags feature with the following combinations:

enabled

Enable-Do not thaw

Enable Freeze-Thaw every 15 minutes for 10 seconds

not enabled

When enabled, Chrome automatically freezes inactive tabs, which may be added to stable versions of Chrome later this year.
