After creating a maintenance plan on SQL server, the execution records show success, but no backup files are generated in the backup folder. After a morning of troubleshooting, we have a clue.

It turns out that the alwayson availability group defaults to the secondary copy as the preferred source for backup. After I set the execution point of the backup as the master copy, and after performing a backup plan, a backup file was actually generated in the folder.
