Configuration of Windows Server 2012R2 tiered storage

Tiered storage is the most noteworthy new feature of Windows Server 2012 R2, which enables dynamic block storage movement between different types of data, such as fast SSD and traditional hard drives. Many enterprise storage systems have long been able to implement automatic tiering, while Microsoft uses the heat-map algorithm to determine block activity and automatically move "hottest" blocks to the fastest level.

This tutorial describes how to configure storage tiering for Simple mode.

Preparation before configuration:

1. The server is configured with at least 3 hard drives, including a system disk, a SSD hard disk, a SATA or SAS hard disk.

2. The Windows Server 2012R2 system has been installed on the system disk.

Step 1: create a storage pool storagePool and add SSD and a normal hardware to the pool.

1) start server management, go to "File and Storage Services-> Volume-> Storage Pool", and select "New Storage Pool" task.

2) enter the name of the storage pool: storagePool

3) Select a physical hard disk for the storage pool, and select a SSD and a HDD.

4) complete the creation. Before closing, select create virtual disk when this wizard closes

Step 2: use the hard disk resources in the storage pool to create a virtual disk that supports tiering

1) launch the New Virtual disk wizard and select the storage pool "storagePool"

2) enter the disk name, vdiVolume. Also check "create a storage tier on this virtual disk". Enable layering.

3) Select "Storage data layout" and select "Simple". There is no data backup for the Simple layout. If you want to back up your data, you can choose Mirror, but you need twice as many hard drives.

4) the disk type is set to fixed.

5) Select the size of the storage tier, and select "maximum size".

6) confirm the information of the storage pool

7) start creation and check "create volume when this wizard closes"

Step 3: create volumes and file systems on the virtual hard disk

1) Select the selected server and disk on which the volume needs to be created. Disk Select the disk created in the previous step: vdiVolume

2) Select the size of the volume. Set the unit to GB and choose the largest size.

3) assign drive letter

4) set the file system

5) after the creation is complete, close the wizard.

Finally, you can access disk D and test the speed at which disk D copies files.
