In September, Microsoft confirmed that it was building a Teams client for Linux. More than two months later, Microsoft announced on its official blog that Microsoft Teams has been publicly previewed on Linux and can be downloaded and used. The local package is available in .deb and .rpm formats.

The Microsoft Teams client is Microsoft's first Office 365 application introduced into Linux. It is an integrated office software that provides live chat, video conferencing, file sharing and other functions, making it easy for teams to collaborate. Teams is the fastest-growing business application in Microsoft's history, with 20 million active users a day, according to data released by Microsoft last month.

Microsoft promises that this version of Linux will also support all the core features of Teams. However, it is still in a state of public preview, which means that some features may not be available or work properly for the time being. Microsoft staff told foreign media VentureBeat: "there are some functions related to Office applications and screen sharing / control in the meeting, which are not yet available in Linux." At the same time, Microsoft also said that it will make further improvements based on the feedback from the community and look forward to users downloading and submitting feedback.

Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, immediately sent a congratulatory message: "2019 is another incredible year for open source, and Linux is still at the core of all growth and innovation. I am excited that Microsoft Teams is available in Linux. With this announcement, Microsoft introduced its team collaboration center to Linux. I'm glad to see Microsoft's recognition of using Linux to change the work culture."

It is reported that because Microsoft's Skype for Business and Teams applications do not have Linux versions, some employees using Linux devices have to rely on unofficial, unsupported applications for necessary communications. Now the release of Microsoft TeamsforLinux should be good news for many people.

If you get enough positive feedback, Teams may open the door to Linux for more Office applications. However, Microsoft did not respond to many questions about whether other applications would be released to Linux.
